SYDNEY, Monday, 3 p.m. A dclilberate attempt was made onily yes-, terday morning to murder Constable Nicol of Abbotsford. f : A Melbourne constable, while on 'duty, spolce to a man who appeared to bo ill. Ho ;vyns immediately fired at with 9 revolver by the man, the bullet entering tho constable's shouldor. Tho man escaped. A deputation of pastorausts at iiouiKe asked the Minister for Lands for a fifty per cent, remission of rent due for tho next five years. Mr. Carrnthers replied that every caso would be dealt with on its merits. In reply to anothor deputation, the Minister said ho could hold out no hopo of tho Gov ernment-passing legislation tending to keop small settlers off the land. Mr. B. R. Wiseaddressod two large meet ings at Wallaend and Newcastle on Satur day evening. At both places a practically unanimous vote was recorded in favor of the Bill.
