HENTY, Author of "Dorothy's Double," "A Hidden Foe," &c. &c. - PART 9. * Not at all, as times go, Mark, it is quite the thing for a man to have prints showing his tastes, riding or driving, shooting or coaching, or the ring. It you don't like them you can take them down, or, what will be better, take them out of their frames and put some of the champions past and present up there instead.' ' I will see about it,' Mark said, with a laugh. ' I may turn out a complete failure.' 'There is no fear of that, Mark, andl as thie ring is all the fashion now, I can assure vo, it would be considered in good taste, though I own that in point of art most of those things leavo a good deal to be desired. Now that that im portant thing is settled, suppose you come and lunch with me in Covent Gardnen. I don't belong to a club yet, though I have got my name down at a couple of them, but as far as 1 can see they are slow sort of places un...

PRINCIPLES IN FEEDING PLANTS. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 28 September 1911

PRINCIPLES' IN FEEDING PLANTS. On this subject, the following lif contributed by D. Brown; in "Orange Judd Farmer":- .. A plant may bhe starved In'-more ways than; one.-- It is incapable- of. gettingl Jood ollt of an impoverished soil, one robbed of fertilty, On the : other hand, a plant may be in rich soil and the pannt starve-because the earth is so wet .:nd cold that. the,.ohsutlcal,. ehaugee-?d'hot progreas fast. enough to produce food for plant malntenanbe. Where soils a"e sour and cold, be. cause of lack 'f drainage, the bac teria that af in making ptnt food cannot 5nng.llv,, or in suficictt num here, to change the soil compounds Into food elements needed by the plants. So it always happens that on an undrained, low spot, where cnh sub surface is too wet, the crop Is a fail ure. Then, again, the, soil may be rich enough to grhw enormous crops, may be well drained, and yet the crops are tar below vhat they should he. THE INCUBATOR. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 28 September 1911

THE INCUBATOR.. Many failures in the use of incubh tors for hatching are ascribed to the fault of the machine, instead ot.to the want of knowledge on the part of the attendant. A few hints on the care of incubators may prove benelcilal at this time of year. The best place to locate the incubator is in a well-aired house, collar, or in an in'cubator cel lar. The next best place Is in a cor ner of a good-sized roomy kitchen, where the machine can be Itept free from draughts. Some of the best hatches are made in farmhouse kitch ons. Probably the fairly uniform warmer tempoeranture and air charged with steam moisture is responsible for the good results. ,An unused room of even temperatnro in a dwelling is also a good situntion. It is well to have water boillng In the room if you can. The incubator depends uipon the air In the room for the supply of oxygen for the egg-chamber, therefore be sure to have plenty of. fresh air. If you heat with an odl lamp, be sure to use the best kerosene o...

VEGETARIANISM FOR ENDURANCE. Two ý3elgilan: physlclans. who have beoon exporlmentlig with the rosults of vcgetarlanism, report in favor of the practice, "For the most part," say these doctors, "the vegetarians apa pear younger than their age; notably the ladies are distinguished by theolr clear and fresh complexion." They round very little differonice betwoeed regoetarians and meat-eaters so far as strength was concerned. In endurance, on the other hand, a very remarkabld difference was found, the vegetarians surpassing the meat-eaters from 50 to 200 per cent., according to the method of measurement. The method of men suring endurance used by the Belgian Investigators was by means of the Mosso eragraphs. One of the fingers is used to raise a weight as far as pos slble. As the experiment proceeds and fatigue sets in, the height to which thu weight can be raised Is gradually reduced until no further contractione are possible.
