SULPHURIC ACID PROCESS-OF SEPARATING GOLD, SILVER, AND COPPER. (From the 'News of the World.' July 6.) Tni case sent. to the Great Exhibition by Mr. Matheson contains specimens of the various products of the mint refinery. To make this subject well understood, it will be requisite, in the first place, to give an account of the wluole method of parting, as it is termed, the gold from the silver, which is generally known under :the term 'quartig,' or quarta tion,' that is, the alloying one part of "godl tht. is to be reiined witlx those parts of silver by which the gold only constitutes one q-uarter of the whole. The necessity for adding so much silver is owinz to the circumstance that if a less quplntit is cmployed, the gold pro tects the silver from; the solvent action of any menstrua which may .be em ployed, shielding it, as it were, fron its influence. .The menstruum formerly, and still used in England, at all refining establishments except at the mint, is nitric acid. WHAT FARMS, FARMING, AND FARMERS OUGHT TO BE. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 27 December 1851

'iHAT FARM3S, Fi ?-AING, A-Nt FARM3ERS OUGHT TO BE. WVE republish below an interesting letter addressed to the editor of the " Cum berland Pacquet" by "A Farmer." As to the iusiruction to be derived from it b 'practical Australian farmers, they vJill be the best judges; but it ap pears to us that the subject of communi cation includes' much to admire, and manr particulars which may be imitated even here. There are many points in Mr. Hudson's system which will be startling to farmers generally. It ap pears that the rent is upwards of 23s. per acre for light Norfolk land. The averae outlay for oil-cake and artificial mainurcs, over a period of 28 years, has been nearly £2,000 per annunr upon 1,400 acres of land., -The fat meat seat td Smithlied annually is upwards of £6 per acre -over the rhole farm. The labour amounts to £2 per acre, notwith standing that steam power is made avail able in every possible way, thereby show ing that the' use of machinery does not decrease the employment...
