MANDATED NEW 1UINEA FEDERAL MEMBERS TO VISIT Melbourne, Thursday. A party of Federal members will visit the mandated territories nf New Guinea and vicinity on the steamer Marsina leaving Sydney on July 19. Places to be visited will includel Samarai, Rabaul, the Witu Group, Mandang, Karkar, Rogca; Posdamhafen, Seteo, Matty, Longo«; Marón, Soraken, Numa Numa and Kieta. The party will return to Sydney on August 21. The Common- wealth administers these territories under mandate from the league of Nations and has to report annually o.i industry and conditions generally of those places. There "has been considerable discussion at the council of the League recently legarding conditions in the Territory in ques- tion and there is a growing feeling among federall members That they should obtain first hand information on the subject.

SUPREME COURT The case of the King versus Chalbar, otherwise Erranungen, Mac- karney and Dowara, and Larry otherwise Daymaroopna, came before His Honor J.udge Roberts on Wednes- day last. The charge against Erranungen, Mackarney and Dowara is one oi wounding with intent to murder James Alexander Robertson on 131 h February last. Mr Braham appeared for the pro socution and Mr Barratt for the accused. Mr Barratt made an application that the three iccused be tried sep- arate!^. The only interpreter avail- able was Larry who was charged! with an offence in that Court. It was laid down . a the duty of the Court to provide an interpreter in criminal matters. ! RICE GROWING IN AUSTRALIA The industry of growing rice is new to Australia, at least so far as a commercial proposition is concerned. Somié four or five years ago one of the officers attached to the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commiss- ion of New South Wales during a vis- it to America saw rice being grown satisfactorily in California on land which appeared to him to be similar to the heavy soils on the Murrumbid- gee Irrigation «.reas. As a result of a recommendation by this officer to the Commission a quantity of seed was obtained from California for trial purposes. The first crop was planted about four seasons ago. For two seasons cultivation was restrict- ed to experiments earned out by the Commission. Two seasons ago, however, seed was advanced to a number of settlers and a comparative ly small area was planted on farms.
