CORRESPONDENCE. IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 13 November 1879

CORRESPONDENCE. IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDRLA. SIR,-Allow me space in your valuable paper to suggest the advisability of estab lishing in our township a "Debating Club," or what might be more properly termed an "Improvement Association." Such an as sociation, meeting weekly, by providing for discussions on subjects of local as well as general interest, with occasional meetings for select readings, recitations and songs, would supply a want that is much felt at present, more especially by ouryoung men ; and while providing amusement and plea sure would also tend to the information and profit of the members. I remain yours, &e., PUDET. Warragul, 12th Nor., 1587.

PROFESSOR BLACKIE ON LAND REFORM. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 13 November 1879

PROFESSOR BLACKIE ON LAND REFORM. Respecting the urgent necessity for a thorough reform of the Land Laws of Great Britain, Professor Blackie, of Edinburgh, recently made the fol lowing speech :--' We must look upon the accumulation of large estates in the hand! of a few h: an eixe'ptional phenoenon. which a wise Legislature twi!i :hink it a plain duty to counter act raither tihan to encoutmge. OUR MELBOURNE LETTER. -4----- (FRoaI OU5 OWN wN cOnRESPONDFNT.) WernF...SanA, , 12th. Nov. In my letter last week you may recollect my saying that from what I could observe of the present temper of the House, a dis solution must, inevitably, soon take place. We have new the Chief Seretsry's w r I that it will occur as speedily as posible after the harvest, when the farmiug community will have leisure to ]give their attention to political topics. The day following the Cup Day, MIr. Bent moved his resolution condemnatory of the Government's proposed increase of taxa rt'on, but ihe has so little weight in the House, that he talked the seats almost empty. At the conclusion of his remarks, thbe Speaker's advice was that his motion should, be adjourued until the second rsld ing of the Tax Bill was brought forward. Ultshuately Mr. Bent, finding himself in a false position, consented to switlidraw his rcolutio:r' . The lprevailing impression, however, is that retrenchment is as abso late " ...

I arrived in town on Friday, the day before the " blue riband" of the turf in Victoria was run for, and be ing of a sportive turn of mind, made tracks at once for the haunts of those members of the commnumity who, al th ough they lnometimes pull long faces over their ]heavy losses, contrive some how or other to live at their eseC on the best of everything. and dress in fine linen...
