Hsi.nes 230, Mr E. Cooper 218. As amatter of course this was> a surpiise for both sides, the victorious candidate expecting a larger majority, and the losing side being disappointed that the positions were not reversed. The contest, as could only be expected from the gen tleman concerned, was conducted in+ the most honorable manner, and the closeness of the finish shews how di vided the public Were as to the merits of these gentlemen. The majority of ratepayers were with Mr Cooper, but the compact vote of the heavy brigade just landed their choice a winner. As is usual on such occasions speeches were nade, and in the course of sis remarks, Capt Haimes took occasion to object to the one-sided attitude of this journal, in advocating Mr Cooper's claims.
