Sunday in Balmain. Congregational Church. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 16 August 1884

Sunday in Balmain. Congregational Ohuroh. - This western suburb can lay claim to keeping the Sabbath as holy as most of the ^communities : in- and- around. Sydney. There are a host of churohes of various denominations, Sunday schools, and even representatives of the Salvation Army, in Balmain, and what's more the places of worship, are invariably well attended. At-' I tracted by the sound of the joyful bells on Sunday and prewarned by the advertise ment y°ur Ifwt issue, I attended the Balmain Congregational Church, Darling street east. It was the occasion of special services to eommemorate the opening, of a new organ, procured to lead the singing of praiseB to the MoBt -High in sweeter tones than the old harmonium had done. 1 This church has seen a good many years roll, on, like the ' ' shining brook.' It was first erected in 1855 at a cost of JS7000; two years previous to that services used to, be j held in a tent on the property of Mr. N.'D. Stenhouse, and notwithstanding that nea...

Notes of the Week. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 16 August 1884

Notes of the Week Mb, R. B. Wise, barrister-at-law, is not, we presume, a Fellow of the Statistical Society, of London, but it iB evident he makes use of the arithmetical calcula tions published by that sooiety. In his lecture at the! School of Arts, Sydney, he has just told us that in England-the rate of mortality has declined, so that on an average, a man lives two years and a woman three and a half years longer than they used.' If an increase in the length «f human life be a blessing (and there are sotne persons who even doubt that) this calculation is quite refreshing. t* ? tu- ;mp»f»Bmonc;ia ' more on. the side of ladies than on that of gentle men. Perhaps that is to be accounted' for by the fact that men do most of the hard work in this world. They make roads and bridges, railways, telegraphs, build houses, construct steam engines, fit up machinery, plough, reap and sow, bmld ships and unload: them, and write and print the newspapers. They are more exposed too to rough weather...

ELECTORS AND ELECTED. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 16 August 1884

ELECTORS: AND ELECTED. ?Everybody knows what happens in the Imperial and Colonial Parliaments ' WH'en an hon. member gets up' 1 and states'that he 'sees strangers.' 'Strangers' include everybody who are not members or officers of the house ; and their presence is only al lowed by courtesy. It is in the power of ' any member ^to exclude them; and thus the - electors may be deprived Oj. listening. to the speeches , of their re presentatiyes. The newspapers gener - ally manageto secure a brief account of -: what : transpires during the ab sence of the reporters, for they tao are ' strangers,' but it is necessarily im perfect and unsatisfactory. - This power is rarely exercised inEngland, but . in yu our 'own Parliament it has many times, been^ resorted to dufingjthe, present ses sion.' It is a most arbitrary power, and '.t there is no doubt that very soon im ?' portant changes will be made in Par liamentary usuage respecting, it. .. Organ Recital. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 16 August 1884

Organ Keoital. An. organ recital was given in the Congrega tional Church, Balmain, on Tuesday night last, by Mr. W. H. Nash, organist of Christ Church, Sydney. There' was a very fair attendance of the public. ; Mr. Nash played nine pieces dur ing the evening and fully kept up his high, reputation as a manipulator of the intrumen ' tal keys. He opened with the overture' Samson' bv Handel,, which he followed by giving, the. air ' With Verdure : Clad.' (Haydn) and Handel's chorus ' Lift.up your Heads', from the ' Messiah.' One bf the gemB of - the even ing was. the air '0 rest in the Lord,' com posed bv Mendelssohn. Mr. Nash played the solo on the stopped diapason and it sounded exceedingly well in the body of the church. The 'Wedding March' by the same author was also very attractive. The second portion of the recital was opened by. another chorus, taken from the ' Messiah,' entitled ' He trusted in God,' which . together with the duett from Mendelssohn's ' Hymn of Praise,' ' I waited...

Homes for the Pe»ple. ( ,i The attention of our' readers is directed to 'an advertisement from Messrs. The idea of instituting a system whereby working men and others of limited means . could become possessors of their .own free-' ' hold by small periodical payments equivalent to the ordinary rent paid to a landlord (al-, though in sonie measure anticipated by many excellent and well conducted building socie ties) seemB to have been perfected at Balmain, where it was introduced in 1808 by our enter prising citizen, Mr. Alfred Hancock.
