THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON. THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 1858. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 24 June 1858

THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON. THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 1858. IT is s matter of surprise to every person wh0   visits Drayton to observe the unsightly appearance of the dwelling homes in the principal streets,   and the dilapidated condition of the greater   part or them. Strangers would be led to infer   either that the inhabitants were deficient in   enterprise, or that there was a total absence of   that proper pride respecting the welfare of the   township, which is the characteristic of most of   the other rising places in the district. No doubt   the town has been very much neglected by the   authorities who have heretofore had, and continue   to have, the control of the public purse, and this may have had a most deteriorating effect on its progressive improvement ; but in our opinion, and we have taken some pains to get at a correct vie...

RIDE OVER THE RANGES. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 24 June 1858

RIDE OVER THE RANGES. (FROM THE "EMPIRE" MORETON BAY CORRESPONDENT. The country lying between Ipswich and the main range is for the first twenty miles of a level character, lightly timbered, and, from what I observed upon the banks of the Western Creek, capable of being profitably cultivated. The road in dry weather may be pronounced very passable ; but after a fall of rain, the black fatty soil sticks to everything it comes in contact with, in a most anti progressive manner. As the country has been previously described by abler pens than mine, I shall pass over any descriptive account thereof, but merely observe that, whenever the present land regulations are revised so as to enable purchasers to select land in favourable localities without the present tedious aud ruinous delay, a great portion of the country on the eastern side of the ranges will, without doubt, speedily become the purchased freeholds of stock breeders upon a limited scale, and the homesteads of an agricultural po...

LOCAL AND DOMESTIC. POLICE OFFICE. FRIDAY, JUNE 18. (Before J. C. WATTS and J. K. WILSON, Enquires.) [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 24 June 1858

LOCAL AND DOMESTIC. POLICE OFFICE. FRIDAY, JUNE 18. (Before J.C. WATTS and J.K. WILSON, Esquires.)     William Bence, on remand on a charge of highway robbery, with firearms was further remanded for eight days, the heavy rains having unavoidable prevented the necessary witnesses from attending. THOMAS ELLIS v MARY ANN BAMFORD. - This was a summon's case for an alleged assault committed at Toowoomba. The defendant not appearing, a warrant was ordered to be issued for her apprehension. William Williams appeared on summons for a breach   of the 18 Vic. No. 27. The complainant was Mr. W. Bait of Westbrook. From the evidence of the com- plainant it appeared that the defendant came to West- brook, and requested permission to take a horse then running in the paddock, which was his property. The complainant declined to accede to defendant's request, stating that the horse was left in his charge by one John Pattrick. The defendant reiterated the stateme...
