MERCANTILE DEPRESSION. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 5 December 1840

MERCANTILE DEPRESSION. The state of the commercial affairs of the colony seems very precarious at tho prescnt moment. The un natural excitement caused by over speculation, may have dazzled the eyes of the superficial observer for a time ; but like all other kinds of unhealthy excitement, it is now about to pay the penalty of a cor responding depression. A dense elictrie, cloud appears to be over spreading Hieibourne, which requires but a spark to cause an explosion which. may. pour down ruin upon many, and dismay upon all. This part of the colony, however, will only feel the shock in so far as it is connected with Melbourne. The residents of Geelong have hitherto bIeen comparatively free from the influence of the prevailing mania. '1 hey have devoted their energies to the more substantial dtities of eolonization; and their career, though less brilliant, will certainly be more steady and con during. The gloom which envelopes the present moment may'soon be dis pclled but not before a ...

FIRES AT SEA. To the Editor of the Sydney Monitor. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 12 December 1840

FIRES AT SEA. To the Editor of thIe Sydney Monitor. S?x,-I perceive that the talented Dr. Blland. hs turned his attentiou to the subject of extinguishing ft.i s in wool ships at sea; and I was at fist gratified to find that the means pro posed appeared plausible and sati.fnL toty, OhQ further consideration, how. ever, I anm convinced that the plan proposed would be inieff'ctual;. and that the i)octor has .overlooked the peculiar character of the KIND of com* bustion in question. His plan is, to extinguish the fire by filling the hold with carbonic acid gas, obtained from the de.'ompositiotr of carbonate of lime olaced at the bottom of the hold. The idea is ingenious ancd plausihle-so that few would hestatte to give their op probation-to the plan at once -on that very iecounI, however it ought to be scrupulously examined. Tlhe plan would be unobjectionable. supposing that the. wo.l was actually ont fire. the.samte as the box of shavinigs experimented upon. It would be el fectual In c...
