MUSEUM SCHEME POSTPONED. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Morning Post — 2 December 1907

MUSEUM SCHEME POSTPONED. Buring the initial stages of the erection of the now School of Arts, the Coniuiitteo of tho institution thought, it would bc a good idea if a museum could bo arranged for the benc/it af subscribers and others, and a room was urcordingly set anart for this purpose in the new t'lilding. No specimens of any note, however, have come to hand as yet, and it was decided n few weeks ugo to defer tho establishment of tho museum for a year or so, and let the room to a tenant who had applied for it. This will Iring a certain amount of rev- enue to the institution for tho time iK'ing, and should any specimens be obtained in the meantime the mu- seum could then bc started. Cap- tain Hardy, of H.M.S. Fantome, has signified his willingness to take a collector out with him to tho various reefs during tho course of survey, and give him every possible assist- ance to secure what would doubtless form the nucleus' of an interesting and valuable museum.

Drovers, Drovers' Men and Things. --------*--------       STORY OF A TRIP WITH GULF CATTLE. WRITTEN FOR 'THE "POST" (By a Novice)   If you want to see life and Queens-   land take a trip with cattle and you will see both. Acting on this advice I journeyed out to the Gulf, and joined a mob of Dalgonally bullocks bound for Charleville. A good even lot, so I was informed, and quiet, fifteen hundred in all, from Fiery Downs and Augustus, a couple of the last investments of Mr. Donald McIn- tyre, late of Dalgonally.   We got a late start, and did not get into camp until about 10 p.m. I thought it was a bit tough, but was informed "That ain't nothin'; wait a bit and you'll see." I did, and   saw. At Crowfels, on the Flinders, wc. inoculated for pleuro; thence to Richmond via Bunda, Saxby and Cambridge, and on to Hughenden   where the cattle were dipped. IMMIGRANT CANECUTTERS. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Morning Post — 2 December 1907

IMMIGRANT CANECUTTERS. A number of immigrants who re- cently broke their engagements with the Mossman Mill came down to Cairns and proceeded up the line as far as Mount Molloy and Chillagoe, where they were under the impres- sion they would earn 14/- a day eas- ily. They soon discovered their illu- sion, however, and many of them are now back at Port Douglas and Moss- man, looking for work. lt is thought     that the cause of their discontent in the first place was the presence of cer- tain agitators amongst them. A large number of canecutters from the Cairns district left by the steamer Arawatta on Saturday night for Sou- thern ports.

DROVERS. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Morning Post — 2 December 1907

DROVERS. The boss or "Dab and Plaster," as he is familiarly called by the men; is a man of many parts. He steers the mob from the front and has a pass- able time. His troubles are few-bar scarcity of grass and water, pleuro, ticks, station managers, cockies, rus- hes and the men he has little else to   worry him. If he has not stirred up the best water, he is asked up to af- ternoon tea at the station. If he has he is asked to go to that place where blankets are below par and ice at a premium. A successful man works on the principle, that you can't catch. flies with vinegar, sugar is better. Our man worked on these lines. He flattened all the infuriated station managers, cockies and boundary riders with tea and expressions of regret.           An irate cockie would race up to the camp, wanting to know why the bul- locks were a mile off the route. "What; eh! You don't say so; Damn those men- You can't knock...
