Opening of the Numbugga School of Arts [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 7 October 1905

; Opening of -the Numbugga School of Arts, The Nunihiifvga, School of Avis was formally opened on Wednesday night. A meeting had been held sonic weeks ago to ' discuss the, manner of the opening,' and it was decided' to mark the occasion by holding a' ball. The decision at that meeting wai significant' of the interest displayed by the young people of Numbugga in the establishment of a School of Ails in their midst. And the magnificent success which crowned the efforts of the residents to make the ball one worthy of the occasion demonstrates the perfect unanimity' which must exist among the people of that locality. Every one will remember the circum stances which led to the postpone ment of the unveiling of the soldiers' memorial in Bcga, and how tlic date had to be advanced a month and clashing with the open ing of the Numbugga School of Arts rendered unavoidable, although the date of the latter had been pre viously announced. But judging by' the attendance oh Wednesday night any fe...

The summer moon (-hone bright mid cleai' as Matilda Deiibridge said goodnight to Maud on the marble terrace of Holliwnsle; and turned for her homeward walk accompanied by Grendon nnd Mr Gratton. It 'was rather a long one, and when they came to the rond which branched off toward the post town of Lynic, the latter parted with Don and Mattie for his longer walk to Steeplehursl. A few moments later Grendon stood still and laid both his firm strong hands on his companion's shoulders. l: Mattie,' he whispered, in low hurried tones, while the hazel eves, diirk with their unspoken Jove, sought hers— 'Matlie, I must have it out with you now — I can wait no longer. I have loved you so long, so faithfully; for long years I have thought of no one else, loved no other. Tell me, Matlie, do you love me? Is it the woman who will be my wife whom I am hold ing to my breast?' :; Yes, Don, if you care to have her.' Whether any coherent ...

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE EARLY DAYS. CHAPTER I.—Continued. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 7 October 1905

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGBNO, THE EJLIR/Ij-Sr ZDA-YS. By CHARLES WHITE. Chapter I. — Continued. The following extract from n Sydney newspapor of 1826 at once illustrates this type of crime, nnd brings vividly before our eyes the closeness of the bush to Sydney: — Two daring bushrangers, named Jfiwtin anil Wstkins, were enptnred on Momlny lnst, lietwceii four and .five o'clock in the morning near Burwood,' six or seven miles distant from Sydney, by Mnjor Lockycr, J.I'., nnd a party of military, together with Constable Sut laml and O'Menrn (nnd some others) of the police. More Gratuitous Advice. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 7 October 1905

More Gratuitous Advice. 'O2L' in Wednesday's 'Star' adds one bit more to the heap of advice the Budget has received as to how that paper should be run. ' O2L' advises the Budget to treat the Labor Party 'with justice,' and says, Surely he [the editorj cannot think that, by condemning the Labor Party, ho will render himself popular in his new field of editorial work. Now, the Budget will endeavor at all times to treat every political section with justice and nothing more,. and will never seek for popu larity for popularity's sake. If the principles put forward by the Bud get don't command popularity then this paper will have to do without the smile of that fickle goddess. The editor is too well known to be suspected of prostitut ing his principles or 'trimming for popularity. 4k ik. jfc Some more of ' O2L ' : The Labor Party is as honorable as any other party in this State or the Com monwealth, and no more socialistic as is insinuated against it, than either of the others ; and, B - ...

" Trade Union Traditions" [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 7 October 1905

'Trade Union Traditions' I.v referring to the newly elected employees' representative in the Arbitration Court, Mr. Edward Riloy. a leading newspaper des cribed him as being 'well versed in Arbitration lore, and a firm believer in upholding the minimum wage and the traditions of union ism.' And, as if in confirmation of his belief, in traditional trade unionism, Mr. Riley in returning thanks to the delegates for his se lection gave them the following assurance : — 'Although the term of office was short, ho was hopeful of having the good fortune to give some splendid awards, delivered in the interest of the worker,' and although ho qualified this assur ance bj' the remark, 'that was giving them (the workers) justice,' it needs no special sagacity to un derstand what this now arbitrator means by ' splendid awards.' It ma)' be interesting, therefore, tc take brief glances at a very impor tant period in the history of Trade Unionism which may serve tc illustrate some of its striking tra...

Dr. Barnardo and His Work. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 7 October 1905

Dr. Barnardo and His Work. Every time the clock ticks a man dies. And out of the whole of this vast, never-ending procession to oblivion, Longfellow notwithstand ing, only on1? here and there leaves even a temporary footmark that those coming after may see. Amongst these few have over left the impression of a more unique personality than the late Dr. Bar nardo, whoso death was reported last week. As an example of gift combination, Barnardo ranks amongst the most remarkable men of the century in which he lived. Philanthropists full of the gentle fanaticism of humanity are common enough everywhere ; missionaries ready to give their bodies to be burned for the sake of their fellow men can always be found, and a nation, heathen or Christian, sel dom calls for it Mettus Curtius without ' adsum ' being promptly responded. But good_ intentions alone only servo to pave a certain proverbial road, and, being en dowed with a little more, a great many of the unselfish accomplish nothing. Many, ...
