SHORT STORY. AT HONORS Ml (Continued). As 'Belsize read the letter for the second time the affair gradu ally assumed a now aspect, and an expression of triumph and sat isfaction settled on his face. Fate had been kind to him, ai' ter all. He had no need to scheme any more ; here was the part fto his hand, cut and dried. Gerridgs had written that he would remain silent, and he knew that -he was a man who- Avould never go back on his word. He read the letter for the third time, pondering over the 'words. 'The fact of., that lady being wealthy ? ' So there Avas some truth in that, after all. Belsize had onlj_, suspected that Id^lyo'uljd one day be rich. ,;l£j$t piecing together, fragments of 'former conversations, and by connecting .what seemed, to be uiviai ? siucuB ul v viu.yii--;ii; lit; had come to the conclusion that there was a remote possibility of it. ,?_ How or when, he had no defi nite idea, and he had in the first place entered into the spirit of winning Ida for his wife; si...

BACK AGAIN. [Newspaper Article] — The Braidwood Review and District Advocate — 7 December 1915

BACK AGAIN. Mr. R. P. Steele, Presbyterian preacher here, returned to Braid wood on Friday last from a tour of the western district. He travel led by motor cycle, his route be ing through Bungendore, Quean beyan, Yass, Bowning, Grenfell, Forbes, Parkes, Trundle, and Con doblm. In all he negotiated 900 miles. In the course of an inter view with a 'Review' reporter, Mr. Steele said :— 'The crops out. back look splendid along the whole route, and especially in the Burrowa, Young, and Grenfell dis tricts. They are tip to the tops of the fences. A gentleman at Burrowa informed him that his oat crop was 7ft high. Grass is . also plentiful, too, in all these districts. Passing along the road, one could only just discern the sheeps' backs as they grazed 'midst the prolific pastures. After Braidwood the sight of such an abundance of feed was quite re freshing.' OPENING OF THE MUNICIPAL BATHS. [Newspaper Article] — The Braidwood Review and District Advocate — 7 December 1915

OPENING OF THE MUNICIPAL BATHS. These baths were officially open ed by the Mayor (Aid. P. Coffey) on Saturday afternoon last in the presence of a good sprinkling of townspeople. The Mayor, in de claring the baths open for. the use of the public, said they undoubt edly filled a long-felt want. The conveniences were yet of a rather primitive kind, but with the hear ty co-operation of the citizens he felt sure that this disability would soon be overcome. These could be added as funds became avail able with the -assistance of towns . people, which he felt sure would be readily forthcoming, and he looked forward to seeing the baths as well appointed as any that could be found. The site, he said, was a good one, and when the dam filled there would be no lack of swimming accommodation. During the time of our visit only a few swimmers availed themsel ves of the invitation to test the baths, but since they represen ted the pick of the local swim ming basket, the poor response was probably du...

CHANGE OF WEATHER. Thfi long-looked-for and much l^.ed^d rain has come at last as x result of thunderstorms on Sun lav night. Th?ro was not much ?-f it — only 25 points — but it was m^nt, and will do a lot of good in. 'reshening up the gardens and 'M'ops and replenishing the tanks 'n town, which were mostly dry. Sunday was a close, muggy day, and there were indications of an approaching change in the early morning. The rain fell in three showers. Neither lasted 5 very long, but while they did last the rain pelted down in fine style. Yesterday was fine and cool, with a fresh southerly breeze.

Convent Entertainment. Successful Function. [Newspaper Article] — The Braidwood Review and District Advocate — 7 December 1915

Convent Entertainment. Successful Function. The large hall of the Literary Institute was literally packed on Thursday night last on the occa sion of the annual entertainment in connection with the local Con vent school. Long before eight o'clock there was standing room only. At me oacK or me nail me people were wedged in like sar dines in a tin. The passages were also crowded with a closely packed crowd. The attendance was the largest we have seen in the hall, even in the palmier days of the old town, when the population was larger and the 'almighty dollar' more conspicu ous. A more convincing proof of the popularity of the entertain ment could not possibly be fur nished. In fact, the attendance may be said to have amounted to a popular demonstration of appre ciation of the work of the good Sisters. That they fairly deser ved it there can be no question. A vast amount of time and pati ence must have been spent in preparing the children for the or deal, and that they passed through i...
