ALEXANDRA RACES. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 20 March 1908

ALEXANDRA RACES. The annual meeting of the Alexandra Race Club was held on the local race course on Tuesday afternoon last. The I weather did not look very promising, and was threatening throughout the day; in fact, a couple of small showers fell. This tended to damper the hopes of many lovers of the turf from venturing out, but the attendance was about the same as last year. It is not very often that such good racing has been witnessed on the local racecourse. In several of the events the finishes were close and exciting. The coirse was hot in the best of condition owing to the dry weather, and was very hard for racing. All the officials fulfilled their duties to the complete satisfac. tion of all, and the afternoon's programme was executed without the slightest hitch, and well up to time. The responsible position of judge was successfully filled by Mr. J. G. Macdonald, whilst the president, Mr. J. A. Baker was busily engaged during the afternoon attend inlc to the conmfits of thos...

OPEN-AIR CONCERT. The second entisainment presented to the public by the committee of the local free lihbrary, in the show ground, on Fri. day evening last, was a sucoess in every way. . .angley's hioscol e formed the principal attraction, the illustrated songs being a special feature. It was lato before the entertainment commenced, consequently the lengthy programme kept the people until a late hour, but being so interesting everyone remained until the finish. Towards 10 o'clck a cold breezo sprang up, but the night being moonlight many promenaded the'spacious oval and appeared to enjoy the excellent outing. The singing of the lady and gentlemen amateurs was much appreciated, es pecially Miss Laity and Mr. A. Dunn, both of whom were in exceptionally fine voice. Miss Laity, who has secured first prizes in several competitionsin the state, rendered The Moorish Maid and Coming Through the Rye in a capablo manner and received flattering recognition from her hearers. 14r. St. John's Church of England. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 20 March 1908

St. John's Church of England. The Rev. Law is still in charge of the parish and is doing excellent work in bringing the parishioners together and before long anticipates having the whole parish in thorough working order. We understand quite a new order of thuings will prevail in the near future and it behoves all members to rally round the church and so aid those who are working for the welfare of all. The matter of the closing of the church against those who. desire to worship is to be deplored, but in a short time the matter will be settled and things will be, it is hoped, carried on rnore harmoniously, The differenco between the Rev. Scott and those in authority, should not, one would reasonably suppose, interfere with or debar people from public worship in their own church. 'The Rev. Scott has been approached by several to give up the keys of the chuirch, but, acting under legal'.advice, will not doso. This is how the matter stands, and it will be interesting to watch proceed in...

HARVEST THANKSGIVING SERVICES. On Senday last, Harvest thanksgiving services were held in the shire hall. both morning and evening. Although it was a little late for the harvest festival, the members of the congregation set to work with a will and were successful in getting ample material. The hall was neatly and prettily decorated by the ladies, and to see the abundance of excellent fruits, vegetables, etc.. it did not give the "impression that the seansonwas a bad one. On the platform an impromptu prayer desk was arranged on one side, and opposite it the Lectern, used also as i palpit. Alexandra & Yea Standard NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 1908, [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 20 March 1908

glq4xatiru &. )qu *taludad NRC TrMEIRE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, M1ARCI 20, 1908, ALEXANDRIANS have for long past yearned for their township, with its beautiful and picturesque surroundings to become more widely known or "advertised " as it. is now usually termed. This .bject has been attained to such a degree that Alexandra:is in every newspaper in the Commonwealth, and its affairs the subject of discussion 'throughout the length and breadth of the land. The reasons for this sudden accession to fame are most extra ordinary and to our mind singularly painful and unpleasant. Needless to remark we refer-to the state of things existent in connection, with tlhe living of St. John's'Church, Alexandra. We have always declined and will continue declining to discuss the respective rights or wrongs of the contending parties, believing that the matter of church government is wisely left to the properly constituted authorities and forms no part of the layman's functions as a layman. But ther...
