A HUGE STOCKING. THE FRENCH CAPACITY FOR SAVING. [Newspaper Article] — Rainbow Argus — 3 January 1914

% HUGE STOCKING, •» THE FF.2KCH CAPACITY FOR SAVING. The capacity cf the Frcnch sto.cVJog |s perfectly astounding, 'llierc seems, |o be 'no limit to the national hoard pf savings. A three per cent, issue has just been subscribed fo,r eighty ^v;o, times over. It was a sound security, of course, backed up by the credit of the Paris Municipal Coun cil, but even so. the result is amaz ing. ' ^ One explanation may rest on the well-known caution of tho French character, cn its passion for secur ity, for assured income, howevev small, and its correspond'ng dis taste for speculative pio.lts, how ever large. As in, Ireland, so in France, the natural man glues him self- on to posts undar Government, posts carrying certain and safe in comes. Our own Anglo-Saxon naturo bred tho:e merchant adventurers who laid the foundation of the Empire, r.n<i we continue to venture oar- savings in (jistant quarters of th? globe. V/e are imaginative. Being a waitress in an hotel isn't bad work — the different people that come and go keep you ink tested. Some of the customers you like, and look forward to their coming again— but othcts, well, you simply hate to see them come near the dining-room. The only part that isn't too nice is whin some of the: gentlemen take a drop too much, but in the morning when they come begging for a cup of tea you can't help pitying the poor wretches, and how they do swallow it, to be sure—just as if their throats were "brick dry." Talking about tea, I've had experience with a good many kinds, bu; foi giving general satisfaction it's my opinion there's none to beat Robur— I've often been asked " svhat tea's this!"—and when I've told them "Robur No. 1 Giad.\" they've looked surprised, as if they ex pected me to say it was some very costly sort of tea—pet haps the careful way I make it has something to do with its tasting extr;-. nicc—you see I don't wet the tc? till the water* is boiling, and then « t...

A NEW ANAESTHETIC. [Newspaper Article] — Rainbow Argus — 3 January 1914

A NEW ANAESTHETIC. There has recently been discovered a new anaesthetic, which prevents pain after an operation. It consists of a solution of quinine and urea hy drochloride, and before the surgeon begins to operate it is injected around the affected region. The discoverer says that after the patient has recov ered from the effects of the general anaesthetic the solution gives entire freedom from pain, and that it pro motes rapid healing. He believes that it will prove valuable in accident cases, since it will stop the pain in crushed and fractured limbs, and will frequently avert fatal shocks. Injec tion ol :i.e new compound is not fol lowed by intense pain, such as the ad ministration of cocaine often causes. If, after thorough tests, the new an aesthetic proves to be effective and safe, it will be of great benefit to mankind.

I We have had a glorious awakening in | the Arethusa, and I want to interest j your men in the subject of their ever lasting welfare." "Ah!" "Yes, sir, we baptised ten men in the Arethusa yesterday." The Wheat Harvest DELIVERIES AT RAINBOW AND TURKEY BOTTOM [Newspaper Article] — Rainbow Argus — 10 January 1914

The Wheat Harvest DELIVERIES AT RAINBOW AND TURKEY BOTTOM Wheat carting is now becoming general, although in some instances harvesting operations havev not been completed. The deliveries at the local mill and the railway yard is ebtimated at 2000 bags per day. The pressure usually experienced locally is being relieved by the deliveries at the proposed terminus. At Turkey Bottom, over 1000 bags were unloaded otv (Monday, whilst on Thursday this record was easily beaten—1600 bags having been unloaded and stacked by the representatives of Messrs. W. C. Thomas and Son and Messrs. J. Darling and Son, the( bulk of the wheat being secured tiy the former firm. Notwithstanding that each bag of wheat has to be weighed separ ately the work of unloading at Turkey Bottom is being carried out most expeditio\isly, but at the same time the provision of a weighbridge is most essential, $ind in all probability a bridge will be provided for the harvest of next year. Locally the price of wheat is quote...
