Woman's Power. "THE POWER BEHIND THE THRONE." [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 13 July 1898

Woman's Power. "THE POWER BEHIND THE THRONE" The power of -beautiful women over men is a thing often commented on, but the woman must be'beautiful. A woman is only beautiful and power ful under certain conditions. The; most stringent of which is good health, a thing," unfortunately, which is very hard to find among women: to-day. Marriage is on the decline, we are told, and one of the chief reasons for this is that the average mau is hard to satisfy. He wants as nearly perfccfc a woman, mental!}-, j morally, and physically as is possible, and in* the present day very few such women exist; It is not our purpose i to deal with; the first; two. attributes | mentioned; bnt the latter, which is by no means the least im portan t; is well worth a few words which cannot fail to he of interest ,to; all women, married or single- " The woman of to-day does not give herself enough attention in the proper direction; a little time taken from .the study of the; latest fashionsj and: complexion: po...

LAURA TO BOOLEROO CENTRE. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 13 July 1898

li^URA TO BOOLEItOO CENTRE The last estimate made for a line from Laui-a to JBooleroo: Centre was; for'a^stnndafd riarrow-gauge; and gave the cost, at £78,200. The present estimate of £64,500 is based, as I before said, on building the line with 3o-Ib. rails with only 3 in. of ballast under, rtnd'i in my judgment, is an j error of -economy^ ,This line would be a continuation of the exist ing road from Gladstone to Laura, which is constractedwith 40-lb rails ; and I respectfully but Utrorigly urge that .no new;' 3ffc.;; 6 in.' gauge lines dhpnld be constructed - with any lighter jail than 50 lb., that being the standard adopted after full experience and with due regard to future economy, : The estimate does not provide for any rolling stock, and I recommend that it be.swollen by, the addition of £15,000 for this .purpose. The estimate attached to this line is showni iiv * the- table * attached to> my minu te • of -November- 29, 1895,1 the only difterence from $he figures there giv...

PORT PIRIE TO BOOLEROO CENTRE. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 13 July 1898

PORT PIRIE TO BOGL^ROO CENTRE. Although the estimates for these three lines are based upon the use of onlvHD-lb.rails it has not been found possible to reduce the cost as. regards this line, When the last estimate was made in Jnly, 1894, the probable cost was stated at. £191,500, • or £50,000 less than the estimate made in 1892, but as the water, at Port; Gefmein is found to be unfit for loco motive purposes it is uow necessary to place £11,000 oh the estimates for the provision of a water supply. - This estimate does not include the pro vision of rolling stock, but as the line is isolated, baring no connection at any point with existing lines, Bucll pro vision'! is essential, arid £18,500 at least shonld be added -to the sum named. If the construction should be decided upon I think it most nil-; wise to lay it down with 35-lb rails, limiting the baulirigpower to. a W class engine, which would be only Cap able ,of taking p, very light and unre ninnpratiye load over the steep grades n...

The Federl Position. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 13 July 1898

" She Fsdsral Positioa. ARDENT federalists are dismayed at ha; turn thingS' have taken in New South Wales. Mr. Barton, the hope of the unionists, throughout the conti nent, is being out-manceuvred at all points by that arcli-enemy to federa tion, Mr. Reid, and to us it . appears almost a foregone conclusion that ho witl meet with: a crushing defeat at the polls nextmonth. The Port Pirie Recorder. WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 1898. Outport Pilots, [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 13 July 1898

^hc $3ovt $3irie Jtccorber. Wednesday, July 18£ 1898. ; Qiitgert Pilots. At the Marine Board- meeting , otv Thursday- last tk statement ehbwiiig the "earnings of pilots at Port Ade laide and the out ports was laid on the table. From this it appears that while the earnings of the Port Ade laide ; pilots averngcd £403 14s.; 4d. per inan, lc8s £2l each for expense;5, the Port Pirie and Angnsta pilots only averaged £172 Os. 8d., from which expenses amounting to £9 per man hayo to be deducted. Thus "it will be seen that the earnings of the Spencers' Galf pilot* do not amount to haif that of their more fortunate fellow-experts at the metropolitan port, not withstaiiding that piloting in the northern Gulf is a much more arduous and responsible undertaking. Even the harbour pilois are better paid than t!:ose of Ports Pirie and Augusta, though their work is mere child's play compared with tint per formed by the Spencers' Gulf men. Tins is a flagrant injusiica that ought not to be longer tole...

LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH. Council then aat as a Local Board of Health. From Central Board of Health enclos ing the Chief inspector's report. Re ceived. The Mayor said the report was a general repetition of what they already knew. The Inspector had not suggested anything new for the purpose of improv ing the sanitary condition of the town. Looking at the matter in a general way ho did hot know lhat he altogether favor ed a system of deep dr.iiuage, although the'cost would not be as large as some people might imagine." Outsiders were entirely ignorant of the matter when they said that Council had done nothiug for the sanitary condition of tbe town. Who i they cauie to the practical part of the question they foand ihere were many disabilitiea under which fciiey had to labor. He had come to the conclusion that the chief cause of the insanitary eonditipn of the town was that in a great many instances people were housed too closely together.
