A long way from Lakota [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002

A long way from Lakota North Dakota native Helling glad he picked baseball There is no easy path from a town of fewer than 1,000 people in rural North Dakota to the major leagues. Rick Helling is proof. Helling, the new member of the Diamondbacks rotation, is scheduled to pitch today at Phoenix Municipal Stadium against Oakland. But as a high school junior in Lakota, N.D., Helling followed the Oklahoma Sooners and Dallas Cowboys football teams and dreamed of being a pro linebacker. Perhaps he would have been had he not almost accidentally fallen into a baseball career. But Helling, 31, reached the major leagues because he has something more than fortune and athletic ability going for him. "He’s just a real determined guy and intense guy," older brother Rod said. "You put a chip on Rick’s shoulder, and he’s going to accomplish what he wants to accomplish," said Tom Barnard, Helling’s junior-college coach. Rod Helling said Rick’s focus dates to 1982, when another broth...

net gain? [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002

Kidd’s trade viewed as disaster by many KIDD: Trade has helped the Nets become contenders eve of the Suns’ visit to New Jersey, Kidd blasted the "nega tivity" of the Suns management and coaches. His venom was directed mostly at then-coach Scott Skiles. Kidd shouted a nasty expletive at him during the game. This struck Gomez as a "Barkley-ism," a reference to the shots taken at the Suns by Charles Barkley after the club traded away the superstar. "Saying bad things after you leave," doesn’t impress Gomez who now expects a more mixed reaction, maybe even something close to 50-50. "I could be wrong," he says "It could be just a pocket of negativity" toward Kidd . "But I think the impression of him has gone down quite a bit." Tuesday, Kidd seemed to agree. "Maybe 50-50,’’ Kidd said of the reaction his presence in Phoenix will generate. "Booing may be looked on as a compliment.’’ ••• Why did the Suns trade Kidd? Kidd suggests the answer is as mysterious as ...

Life changes not slowing Agassi [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002

Life changes not slowing Agassi New baby, coach have helped aging star remain positive Andre Agassi will be 32 in April, an ancient age for tennis. No other player in the top 10 of the ATP rankings is that old. Few players, though, can play at as high a level as Agassi. So even with his millions in the bank, even with a new wife (Steffi Graf) and baby son at home, his motivation remains simple. "I still feel like if I play my best tennis I can win," said Agassi, who dispatched Scottsdale nemesis Francisco Clavet, 6-3, 6-2, Tuesday in the Franklin Templeton Classic at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort. "That’s always enjoyable, winning. Plus I want to feel I have given it everything I have. "I still have more tennis in me. For me to rest well at the end of my career, I have to see this through, not just stop because it was convenient." Agassi, the top seed, plays Great Britain’s Greg Rusedski today at 6:30 p.m. in the AGASSI: At 31, still among game’s best s...

Rested Burke too much for Devils [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002

Rested Burke too much for Devils COYOTES 4 DEVILS 1 Now 63 games into the season, Coyotes coach Bob Francis is still mixing and matching his lines, still hoping to get more than one trio to catch fire at a time. Shane Doan is the fourth line center for the time being, while Claude Lemieux was moved back into the top six forwards. But between the Phoenix pipes, nothing has changed. Sean Burke is the man. Period. End of story. Rested and regenerated by the 12-day Olympic break, Burke’s first four games down the home stretch have been nothing short of, well, typical for the man the Coyotes have hung their helmets on for 2 1 /2 seasons. Burke was the difference again Tuesday, nursing another early Phoenix lead all the way home, making a glove-full of big saves in the the second period, stuffing Patrick Elias on a breakaway in the third and making a 4-1 Coyotes win look a lot easier than it really was. "That was a huge win for us,’’ said Burke, who has allowed two goals o...

Top of the first [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002

Top of the first The speed of which the Cards re-signed offensive tackle Anthony Clement and the flirting with free agent defensive end Leonard Little last weekend perhaps indicates at least some power ceded from owner Bill Bidwill to coach Dave McGinnis. McGinnis has a plan; the Cards so far have worked within the parameters. The Cardinals will also bring in a host of free agents this week, including a couple of big names. But that doesn’t mean much. Not yet. Until they sign a couple players, it is just a relatively empty gesture. Remember the fruitless wooing of Ricky Watters? Any optimism about the Cards should be tempered, perhaps even to the point of pessimism. History dictates that.
