Garden flans Winter WorK , Writte i for tho LIVE STOCK Woian . The gardener who can calmly sit down during winter and say to himself that there is nothing at all that I can oo . Is one , you can wager , leaves tco 1 . s rot and never thinks of using a little paint during stormy wsather . H 2 doasat sea any sense in pruning and wouldn t tak 3 the trouble to readtlu experiences of others . In fact , the things he would not do ore just about the things that the painstaking successful farmer or gardener is always doing . If the grapes have not been pruned choose a comfortable day and give them a good over-hauling . If the vines are old trim the new wood back to three buds and here and thcte cut out some of the old . When vines aro young and do not fill the trellis it is well to trim with the idea of tho shape and habit of the future x . m In mind , rather than the little fruit your young vino may bo producing . Better 3 uy A Farm . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 2 January 1902

Better 3 uy A Farm . Rapid and in many cases sensational increases in the Wall street values of railroad and industrial stocks have been conspicuously exploited in the newspapers during the past year , yet none of these securities liave appreciated as farm lands have done , nor in many instances arc they as safe an investment . Every acre of land in the corn belt is good security for present prices and mnch of the land will double its present value within the next ten years . Intensive cultivation aud live stock improvement will accomplish much in this direction . Urban populations are growing , but the area of the corn belt is limited £ nd practically ascertained . No where else can soil of such fertility be found , nor a climate better adapted to beef , pork , and mutton production , and this will be a meat eating nation tor all time to come . Railroads will go into receiver s hands , industrial concerns collapse , and city property cease to produce sufficient to pay taxes , but t...

Ad * Otce to ^ Th or thorn Men . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 2 January 1902

Ad * Otce to ^ Th or thorn Men . a HE warning given by Secretary Cowan of the American Siorthcra Association is worthy of heed . Last year Shcrlhorn breeders achieved signal victories in sale and show ring but when tn competition with the breeds in fat cattle and block contests got the worst of It . Criticism has in consequence been severe and not nnjust and will doubtless stimulate breeders to do better next year . The breeder looks to the farmer for a market and the latter can be best impressed with the excellence of a breed for beef purposes by seeing representative animals fitted for tbe market and block . If Shorthorn breeders instead of selecting herd culls for these contests will use the best types of the breed they will meet with better success .
