General McHtqcncc . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 18 December 1869

General McHtqcncc . MY FRIENDS REVENUE . The nearly dissolution of the English Parliament in 184— , by releasing me from . ,. editorial labors , enabled me to accept the invitation of our Italian special correspondent to visit Milan . I knew nothing of my inviter beyond the circumstances , first of his having been warmly recommended by parties hi & h iu the world of continental politics , and next ot his sustaining this recommendation by a series of vigorous articles full of early information relative to Italian movements—the revolution was then in progress—full of unreserved denunciation against Austrian and priestly domination , and equally full of hopeful anticipations of what then appeared to most British politicians to be a mere geographical expression , the unification of Italy . Tho character of his contributionsfiery , martial , uncompromising—led me to idealise the contributor as of Titanic proportions . Mv astonishment was genuine when I saw that he was a man o...

"SOLAR WONDERS . " [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 18 December 1869

SOLAR WONDERS . The Marvel * of the Sun—The ZoeUner Pictures-Tito Ran Flames — Solar Storms . [ From the London Spectator , NOT . 18 . ] Astronomers have been revealing so many wonders in the vast globe which rules the planetary scheme , that we cannotyet hope to see the startling results of theirresearches co-ordinated into a consistent whole . — On every hand new marvels are being brought to light : At one time . Mr . Lockyer surprises as by exhibiting the amazing velocities with which the solar storms rage across the blazing surface of our luminary . At another , the energetic astronomer who presides over the Roman observatory tells us of water within the fierce tumult of the solar spots . The Eew observers track the strange influences of the planets on the solar atmosphere , watching not only the great tide of spots which sweeps in the ten-year period over the solar storm-zones , and then leaves our sun-clear from speck or stain , but also the ripples of spot formation which com...

AS ETEMFUL HISTORY . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 18 December 1869

AS ETEMFUL HISTORY . A Man with his Scalp In His Pocket—The Dangers or the Par West . From the Detroit Tribune , Dec . 1 . A few days since , an Englishman named William Thompson arrived here from tbe west on his way to Buffalo , where he has friends living . He was in destitute circumstances , but through the kindness of many of our citizens , his wants were fully supplied , and his pockets were well filled with money to enable him to care for himself in the future . This man is indeed a living wonder . He has been fearfully wounded in several places by the Indians , and scalped , and the fact that he carries the scalp in his pocket is the best possible evidence of the truth of his statement . He has furnished ns with some facts concerning his recent history , which we append , substantially in his own words : I came to this country in 1864 , and went west in the employ of the Union Pacific Railway company , where I remained until Aug . 6 , 1867 , at which time I had charge of a ga...

Imaginary Ills—How a Spinster was Provided with a Remedy . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 18 December 1869

Imaginary Ills—How a Spinster was Provided with a Remedy . From the New York Telegram , Nov . 25 . One summer morning , a few years ago , a merchant of Boston , residing in the tuburbs , visited a well-known drugstore with a recipe for the preparation of pills . It was carefully examined by the druggist , the several ingredients weighed out and converted into a paste , which he and his assistant proceeded to put into the requisite shape . The compound was a ponderous mass , and , as pill machines were not then in use in apothecaries , the whole force of the store were actively employed until late in the afternoon in the necessary manipulations . When the order was filled it was found that the store contained no box large enough to receive it A strawberry box , holding a quart , was therefore purchased at a neighboring provision store , and the pills , over a thousand in number , carefully packed therein . At the appointed hour the customer again made his appearance , when the box , ...

Mtn-of-War—Some Big Ships that are Building for John Ball . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 18 December 1869

Mtn-of-War—Some Big Ships that are Building for John Ball . The keel of one of the typical first-class British war ships for the future has just been laid at Portsmouth . She bears the suggestive title of Devastation , and along with her consort , the Thunderer , to be shortly commenced , will take precedence of all the existing grades in the British navy . Her length is 285 feet , her extreme breadth 62 J feet , mean draft 26 feet , and tons burden , 4 , 406 , old measurement . She is to be worked by two engines of 800 horse power , and her estimated speed is set down at 12 i knots per hour . She will be able to carry 1 , 600 tons of coal , sufficient for a three weeks cruise . She is to be constructed on the genuine turret principle , without any attempt to unite , by the addition of masts and sails , the characteristics of two distinct varieties of fighting ships . Being , then , neither adapted for a cruiser nor a guardship , she is simply a floating battery of enormous power . ...

Bridal Costumes a Century Ago . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 18 December 1869

Bridal Costumes a Century Ago . To begin with the lady : —Her locks wero strained upward over an immense cushion , and sat like an incubus on her head , and plastered over with pomatum , and then sprinkled over with a shower of white powder . The height of this tower was somewhat over a foot . One single white rosebud lay on its top , like an eagle on a haystack . Over her neck and bosom was folded a lace handkerchief , fastened in in front by a bosom pin , rather larger than a copper cent , containing her grandfather s miniature set in virgin gold . Her airy form was bracsd up in a satin dress , the sleeves as tight as the natural skin of the arm , with a waist formed by a bodice , worn outside , whence the skirt flowed off and was distended at the top of an ample hood . Shoes of white kid , with peaked toes , and heels of two or three inches elevation , enclosed her feet , and glittered with spangles , as her little pedal members peejped curiously out . Now for the swain . . His h...
