Virginia was styled the " Old Domin ion" becsaao daring the protectorate of inromwen something liKo an attempt was made to invite Charles II., it is said, thvn a refugee to establish an in. dependent dominion within her terri tory. Many of the HO-callcd "blue laws" of Virginia arc, in their way, as laughable a those of any other of the colonial -governments. Wo may well wonder if pontcritj- will laugh at us in future time, twenty years from now, as wo love in the present generation to poke tun at our ancestors, or rather, as we hhould eay, at our neighbor's an cestors. While tho " new departure " theory has been accepted as their rule of action by some of the Democrats, it-is severely de nounced by others. Some of the Stales, in their Democratic conventions, have adopted about tho same resolution for their platform as thow embodied in the resolutions of Vallandigham, which so astonished the United States as tonished the States, because it was an innovation in Democratic routine little expected, and not at all desired by the rank and file of the old fogy, non-pro-grcssivo clement of tht party. It was further a cause of astonishment because its primo mover was Clement L. Vallan digham, who had never " been wanting found in Democracy, and who had been thc.pole-star in his faith, around which other bodies had unceasingly rolled, never changing and undeviating. The progressive element of tho Democratic party arc ready and willing to ad...
