•ma* W. MITCHELL. EDITOR. Thursday, July U, 1867. To the elder settlers of the State there is little need to explain any thing concerning the early history ot the Minnesota State Railroad Bonds. But there are thousands to whom the facts are all new, and as the question concerns them equally with the others we will briefly review the circumstan ces attending the issue of these bonds. Thus the matter rested until last winter, when the Legislature proposed to render the State fully liable for the complete payment of these bonds, prin cipal and interest, making an aggregate of about four million dollars. The question to be decided by the people at the polls mxt fall is, whether they will assume the payment of this immense sum, which will continue to increase with its accumulating interest—wheth et they feel that they ought to piy it —or whether they will demand that a fair and equitable plan shall be prepar ed" and admitted-«« «Pt-«-^i. The whole case should be* considered calmly, and a...

^y ANOTHKR '•••A IKHPaST" »KSN»A T1UR. A N to Discover** Im Ontario. From the Oswego Palladium. We know that it has been customary for the nianufaoturere of tho tnarvcllov to revive at intervals the story of the 'Sea Serpent," which has gone the ounds of tho papers "many a time and ft," and been laughed at by the pub lic, as it should have been. In the face of this faot, we do not hesitate to pre sent the following statement, which we believe to be true in every particular, for the reason that we have it upon the testimony of eight persons, six of whom saw, etch for him and herself, all that is contained in the statement, who for reasons given saw only a portion there of. I we were permitted to give the names of those who make the statement no one at all acquainted in Oswego would doubt it for a moment. ^SifcV tSto* £fc (Mowl gotmwl W I E EDITOR. Thursday, July. 18, 1867. RBPVDIATION. The mighty intellects that preside over the columns of the St. Paul dailies are devoting their wonderful powers with unceasing assiduity to convince the people of Minnesota that, in order to avoid the stain of repudiation, they must submit to the infamous bond swin dle which these papers advocate. The impertinence—nay, the downright ras cality—of the proposition is only equal led by tho pertinacity with which it is pushed. Tho State is supposed to be the patient, down whose throat these presumptuous quacks are endeavoring to force a deathly drug, on the protense of eradicating a disease. "Take our medicine you must"—bellow these bond doctors—"you shall have no oth er. If it kills you, or cripples you for years, no matter. We, of the Press and Pioneer, say it! Such is the case. The bond holders and their organs will admit that there is no other plan, or shall bo no other, by which the difficulty can be...

eaasa I A N The country nee so much that grand in tbo character of Sheridan, thai it will not tamely submit to hia degradation. Here is a man who proved himself in war to bo not only the most brilliant of all our general*, but accor ding to General Grant himself, if we may credit twenty narratives, one of the greatest captains of modern times. In peace he has been as great as in war. When President Johnson endarored to coax him to sustain his policy by equiv ocating in reference to the New Orleans riots, he startled the country by spurn ing the temptation, and pronouncingthe riot to be a massacre worse than Fort Pillow. This showed tbo intrepid hon esty of the man, and tho possession ot a virtue that rose above an influence to which even Grant yielded when, in the moo of the infamy of that massaeie, ho allowed himself to bo carried around the country in the President's a in while the President himself defended the riot and denounced its innocent victims. There were, no doubt, good r...

imm THE JPOTATOE PATCH. To dig a crop of potatoes out of the weeds is a fit punishment for the crime oT potty larceny, and not at till pleasing toman or toy. Qn ono or two occasions we have Cutddo ai just such penalty for our neglect, uot propose to do it a^uin. But Wo see it repeated year after year by farmer Mason and larmer Mack. Last fall the latter had a tough job of it, and he assured us that it was his last indisoretion of the kind, and that hence forth he would only plant as many pota toes as lid could thoroughly cultivate. The crops should not be worked so as to disturb the hills after the potatoes are in bloom, but this need not prevent clean culture. After the crop it laid by in the usual manner, a double shovel plow can be used to go through the rows, being careful not to disturb the hills, but to break up the middle space, and tben cut or pull up the weeds in the hill. This will allow the plants to make a good growth, and at digging time the field will be clean of weeds...
