SEWBLL AND BOWEN. RUMORS ABOUT THEIR MIS SION TO THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. Various Speculations Here What Was Said About Them When They Left San Francisco. There is much inquiry in town as to what relation the visit of Harold M. Sewell and Win. S. Howell may have to public affairs. The latter has been regarded as a correspondent of the World, a piper of which he is an editor, though it is known that he bore certain assurances to Provisional offi cials here which put them in cheerful frame of mind. As to Mr. Sewell, some say that he is a newspaper cor respondent, others that he is a sort of brevet commissioner and others that he was hired by Paul Neumann to write for the ex-Queen that personage having begun to feel the need of a liter ary bureau. On all these points Mr. Sewell himself is in the state of mind which Simon Cameron once found General Grant in. It will be remem bered that old Simon, who was not good at spelling, wrote that Grant was "dum as a dam cl itn." The San Francisco Ch...

The regular and volunteer forces of the government ate supper last evening at the barracks about six o'clock. At ten minutes to nine Private C. Knutsen was found violently sick on his post at the Richards street gate of the Palace yard, and was carried to the barracks on a stretcher. By this time the men on duty at the barracks were dropping down in twos and threes and were im mediately put to bed. Dr. Rodgers was in attendance and did all in his power to relieve the men, who showed every symptom of arsenicf.1 poisoning. They were attacked with severe vomiting, accompanied with pains in the stomach, parched throat, and violent diarrhoea. By this morning those who were first and most severely attacked were very weak and are still unable to leave tneir beds, although out of danger. There are three men still do...
