The symptons attending the bite of this insect have been variously described; but all observ, era unite ia dzolaring that ;t is as deadly as the rattlesmake, or even as that night-mare of India, the Fobra di capello. Dr. Wright, of Auckland, ia recording a care with, in his own practice, states that "the patient, who was a stout. strong man, within twenty minutes after being bitten by a katipo, de veloped a bloated or tumid state of the face, accoipanied by a rolling of the eyes, dilated pupils, with a pulse frequent and faller than nat ural. 'I thought the symptoms were those of rabies, and offered a glass of water. On attempting to drink, violent convulsions ensu ed, with a sensation of chocking or suffocation. Hypodermic injections of morphine were tried without avail. The'ekin was covered with clammy perspiration, and after seventeen hours of terrible suffering the patient expired.' The Rev. W. F. HONORS TO WADE HAU'PTON. Washington CAPITAL: Wash ington is not much of a.place for lionizing. Ordinarily, the statesman comes and goes about Washington, and is not noticed, save by housekeepers with rooms to let, or by fel lows which jobs in. sand. However lofty or imposing the statesman may seem to den izens of the rural districts and the provincial towns, who know him only as they see his name in the special dis- 1 patches, and who never see him except in campaign times. when he comes, with brass band infront, a torchlight pro cession in his rear and a com mittee of highly respectable citizens carrying his overcast and umbrella, he certainly dwindles in the perspective o Washington to proportions all the way from ordinary to in significant- -in some case all the way from commonplace to contemptible. Henry Clay, colossal as he was in the eyes of the Old-live Whigs, who, as to the north, believed in free soil; as to the south, main tained the divine right of every gentleman to wall...

INCIDENTS OF THE ST.LOUIS FIRE. J. E. Russeli. chief engineer of the hotel, made a statement of his experleace on the nitht of the fire, which throws some light on the origin of the fire. He says that he left the engine roonf at about halt past eleven o'clock, leaving an assisa tant in charge, and went to his room on the fifth floor. near the baggage elevator; he was aroused about Ave minutes past one o'clock by the shrieks of a woman. He hur ried out and found the hall filled with smoke, which came from the freight elevator, but saw no fire; started for the south part of the house, with a view to descending by the servants' stairway; was obliged to crawl on hands and knees to pre, vent suffocating, the smoke was so dense; there were a number of wo men on the fifth floor, crying pite ously for help, whom he told to follow him to the lower floor. Some did and others were too distracted apparently, to do as he dirccted; "finally he reached the dining-room Boor, passed into the kitchen...

LOUISIANA RBE8EMED. (Philadelphia Timees. At last the day of hope long prayed for has dawned upon the Pelican State. In many respects the fairest of the Commonwealths of the South, the lot of Louisiana has by perversity of fate been most pitiful. Her lauds laid waste by neglect, her treasury strip ped again and again by those who claimed to hold her hon or in their keeping, her credit made a by-word in the mar kets of the world, her soil of ten drenched in the blood of her sons, crushed to earth by military power and kept prostrate that her ravishers might trade in her agony, for twelve years she has been a shame to herself and a re proach to the American Re public. The story of the suf ferings of the people of Louis iana, sometimes through their own folly, but oftener by rea son of the sins of others, will always constitute a page in history which every good citi zen of a nation boasting its freedom will long to efface. but ever it will remain inef faceable. It will be good for tun...

SnTHA EUnIr'AN WAlt. 1 [N. 0. Pikayune.1 1 Thecable dispatches appear I to confirm the report of the < battle at Kars on Sunday. Kars is a strongly fortified i town on the frontier of Asiatic Turkey, distant about one hundred miles northeast of Erzeroum, and in the line of the Russian advance upon that stronghold, which is the headquarters of the army of defense. The Russian army of the Caucasus is about 100, 000 strong, commanded by the Grand Duke Michael, the brother of the Czar. The headquarters of the Russian army were at Tiflis, on the Russian frontier, and near the foot of the Caucasus moun tains on the Asiatic side. From this point there is a ma cadamized road through the Caucasus Mountains, connect ing with the Russian railroad 1 to the Don river. Russia has been careful not to ignore the military importance of rail connection with her army of the Caucasus, and the time of 1 travel from the Don river to the foot of these mountains is now reduced to two days. The army will...
