Wc lay before our readers this week the Presidnt's Message, which is a document worthy the careful examination of every reader. Ow ing to its length we have not the time nor space to comment on it this week. For the same reason a large amount of local and other news is crowded out. ATLANTIC CABLES. The old Atlantic cables hare ceased to transmit news either way for some reason or other. All the news we get now, comes over the French cable which also works very badly. Fireside Department. MAMMA'S BAREFOOT BOY. BY A. H. POE. Long he listened to the story Of the poet's "Barefoot Boy;" listened silently and earnest. Caring naught for ball nor toy; And the eyes of brown grew browner, And the cheeks of pint grew red, And upon his hand he rested. Thoughtfully, his curly head. For awhile he seemed to ponder. Then he slowly went away To a dim, unnoticed corner, Where he sometimes hid in play. There atlasseled shoe and stocking Bravely tugged with all his might; Off they came, at last, revealing Dimpled balls of pink and white. Softly, softly, o'er the carpet, .Strayed the little pearly feet, Till he rested close to mamma, Bested bloshinly and sweet; Half abashed and half emboldened. Raised his eyes, so brown and coy; "Mamma," and his lips were smiling, "Isn't I our barefoot boy?" OUR MOTHER. Bound the idea of one's moth er, the mind of a man clings 'with fond affection. It is the first deep thought stamped upon our infant hearts when yet soft and capable...

Life is so cheap and jet so dear We prize it, but we scom it too, And plod onr round from year to year With little or to hope or do; Each day brings fretful cares and coil, And sorrows come, and Joys depart.
