COMMUNICATED. Salem, March 19. Editor Capital Jouknal. Your cviddnt sympathy with the principle of prohibition and your fairness in discussion encourage me to ask again the favor of your col umns for a friendly criticism of your own posltiou and for such a vindi cation of the wisdom of partisan ac tion as I may be able to offer., First, in an editorial published last Tuesday, you ask what we ex pect to do without the aid of one or the other of the two great parties-rand answer your question by s-aying: "of course nothing." Your answer is not right. Now, let me guess. You further say: "It is also true that every measure for the restriction of the liquor traf fic or for its total abolition, ...

EVENING CiAPITAL JOURNAL THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 18SS. flreat Destruction of Timber. The Orcgonian says Mr. J. M. Bernhardt, special timber agent, who has for sonic time been inspect ing timber land in Tillamook coun ty, arrived in Portland Tuesday. He came across the mountains on horseback, and reports the road free from snow except about flfty feet in one place, but there are a number-of trees across the track, which is still very muddy, and no attempt will be made to cross with wagons for six weeks yet. Mr. Bernhardt was much surprised to see the great ravages which have been committed by fire in timber of the Coast range. He explored seven townships of timber on the Trask and Wilson rivers, and from the top of the range looked away across miles and miles of charred stumps reaching clear to theNestucca. Ho was told by an old settler that on account of a quarrel between two men twenty five years ago, about some rails which one had cut and which the other claimed were split too small, ...

":""-wrir sT" 'f EVENING CiAIMTAL JOURNAL FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1888. SXAGS IX TUB RIVKII Three or Four Dozen Logs Slicking np in the Willamette Which Should lie Removed. The Albany Herald says that several ugly looking dungs have for a long time, been a menace to steam boat s""ln the Willamette at various points along the river. Kxeept at night boats are in no particular danger from them, for their jagged ends show from one to three feet above the surface of the water, and can easily be steered clear of. But this will not be. the case should there be a few days of heavy rain, when the river would rise several feet. These snags are what are techni cally known to steamboat men as "sawyers," that is, they are held to the bottom of the river by dirt laden roots, and the broken tops saw up and down with each wave of a pass ing boat. It was just sucli a snag as these that the Oregon Pacific steamer N. S. Bently struck in the upper river, and went to the bot tom before she reached the shore. ...
