Tile streets of our city, after nightfall, have become unsafe for pedestrians, and there is actually a "reign of terror" prevailing among tbe more quiet classes of our people at tlie present moment, caused by tbe alarming increase in tbe "tbugging" and "garroting" deuredations committed by nightly prowlers upon the unsuspecting. On Friday niglit last, ayounj. gentleman connected with the distributing departuitiit of the Virginian, Mr. Joseph G. Fiveash, a very quiet and exemplary yiung man, who is highly esteemed in the community, while on his way borne at a late hour, was knocked down at the corner of Freemason and Catherine stree's, by white ruffians, severely wounded on tbe right side ofihe head, and while lying senseless, his pockets were searched and robbed of their contents. Whitehurst & Co., situated on the northeast c >rner of Wide Water street and Market Place, was broken into, and an attempt made by the burglars to force the safes. the outside fastenings of the safe bar confined by a padlock, were forced by breaking the hasp of the lock.
