| Vagaries and Error* of (be I'iess. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 2 July 1849

Vagaries and Errors of the Press. The Press of the United Stales, nay, of the whole world, seems to have run riot on the strength of the discovery of gold in California. Column alter column has been devoted to descriptions of the "El Dorado," and the realms of classic lore have been invaded to furnish expletives and synonyms sufficiently gaudy and gorgeous to amaze and please the reader. " Pactolean streams," "golden sands," and all the paraphernalia of words with and without meaning, have flourished in the plenitude of capitals and Pica, and "special expresses" many hours "in advance of the mail" have announced to gaping aspirants that fifteen barrels of gold dust had been gathered in a single season by one person! " Letters from California," written in the seventh story back attic of some boasting morning sheet, have gone forth to swell the tide of mingled error and truth that has literally swept over the world, and books with high sounding titles professedly wrilten by actual min...

Improvement of the Country. That new comers and those abroad may see that the pursuit of gold digging in not the only occupation of the inhabitants of California, we have prepared the following account of new cities which have been laid out within the last few months. We have compiled these notices from the best knowledge in our possession, and we believe them in the main reliable. At any rate we shall be very happy to correct any erroneous statements, or to pubIish more detailed notices, if the facts be furnished. We must confess that many of these enterprises bear more the character of mere speculations, than of bona fide desires to build up a town, and we are inclined to think that with some of them such will certainly be the result, in despite of the wishes of their proprietors. In many instances it seems to have been forgotten that so soon as steamers are introduced on this Bay and its tributaries that the whole character of transportation and trade will be revolutionized. Such...

OFFICIAL. HEAD QUARTERS TENTH MILITARY DEPARTMENT — San Francisco, Cal., June 18, 1849. [Orders No. 25.] Very few of the discharged New York Volunteers having availed themselves of the provisions of the instructions of the Secretary of War, as published in Department Orders, No. 4, current series, that order is now republished for the information of all concerned, and notice is now given that without further instructions from the War Department, transportation home will not be furnished to any of those volunteers who may fail to make their election before the first of September next. Persons desirous of availing themselves of the provisions of the order above referred to, will apply to the senior Quartermaster of the Department, who will cause them to be enrolled upon their furnishing him with satisfactory evidence of their discharge from Col. Placer Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 2 July 1849

Placer Intelligence. Our latest dates are to the 24th ult. from the Sacramento mines, and from the San Joaquin country we have a few items of intelligence under date of June 25. An inordinate dearth of news and failure of correspondence, forces us to compile, from various accounts, our summary of to-day. Throughout the mines the rivers are steadily falling. The chief impediment to successful labor during the past three months has been high water. Washings were abandoned for the dry deposits during the flood, but its slow, sure abatement will now cause mining to resume its wonted vigor, while it will give impetus to trade, and animation to business pursuits generally. There are vague stories of very heavy work having been accomplished at the Dry Diggings of the Middle Folk, American river, but from the best authenticated accounts in our possession, we have not been able to gather information of this nature, although it is generally conceded, we believe, that at these mines the more i...

The Convention. The project for assembling a convention to draft a State constitution, to be submitted to the people for ratification, has now advanced so far towards a certain accomplishment, that we feel it our duty to offer a few suggestions relative to its composition, and the principles which should govern in selecting its memhers. We never had, and have not now, any desire to become a politician in the sense in which the word is usually understood, but we confess that it is a cherished wish with us to advance the true interests of California. We desire to see her take that rank which her commercial position on the coast of the Pacific, her untold mineral wealth, and her great agricultural resources, point out as her destiny ; and we desire that she on whom all eyes are turned, and from whom so much is expected, should not seem ignorant of her own illimitable resources, nor prove recreant to the great principles which were the first political lessons of her citizens, and which ...

The eioldeu Cmifrwlioii. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 2 July 1849

The Golden Emigration. Never, in the history of man, has a single event so universally affected the world as the discovery of the gold mines of California. Coming as it did so close on the heels of the Mexican war and the revolutions of Europe — blazing as it did through the smoke of battlefields, and booming above the crush of falling thrones, it seems to have waked the last chord, and struck the last string which was needed to immortalize the year 1848. As in California, so in other countries, all men were possessed with the desire for gold -- for sudden wealth. The old, the infirm, and the decrepid longed for their lost strength or their full proportions, that they might journey away for the golden land — the competent desired to embrace this favorable opportunity to become immensely rich — the young were burning with ardor to delve for the precious ore — and already the advanced guard of the vast army wending their way to California have landed on our shores. The vivid imaginati...
