February 1980 & ife ^ 4H Southwest Chinese Journal 16 "PIONEER " CHINESE H0UST0NIAN MAMIE LEE CHU by June Dove Leong Although Mamie Lee Chu is now a widow, she looks back with fond memories to the days when her husband and their relatives worked diligently and closely with the late Rev. Travis Key to raise the necessary funds to build Houston's first Chinese church - the Chinese Baptist Church - at that time located down- town. This church, now in the Memorial area, has been instrumental in keeping the Chinese people to the Lord - and for the unbeaten record for decades - of almost no Chinese crime in the City of Houston. A Labrador, a Dachshund, and a part Beagle part Terrier are Mamie Lee Chu's pets which she nurtures with tender loving care. She has been for twelve years the treasurer and manager of the Texas Lee Fe- deral Credit Union, a job she voluntarily holds with love and devotion - an organization dedicated to fel- low Lee cousins to enable them to initiate their own b...

13 S? r£j Oft Southwest Chinese Journal February 1980 JUDGE & MRS. TED WU HOST RED EGG PARTY by June Dove Leonq There was nothing but love and admiration to greet Theodore Albert Wu as relatives and friends gathered Sun- day, December l6th to celebrate his third month on Planet Earth. Adorable and sweet in a beautiful heirloom lace trimmed cap and gown, once worn by his father Ted, little Theodore was christianed into the Episcopal faith in the Chapel of St. John the Divine in River Oaks. A full congregation was present as Bishop Harold Gosnell, now retired, conducted the holy ceremony. Dr. Gosnell was once minister of San Antonio's St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where Ted Wu as a San Antonio lad with his faunily worshipped. Dr. Gosnell was later elevated to Bishop of the Diocese of West Texas. Distance separated..but throughout many years the strong bond of friendship remained between this minister and the Episcopalian Wus. Present to witness the blessed occasion were two loving ...

February 1980 ® i$7 Southwest Chinese Journal 20 p REFLECTIONS by WILLIAM DER BING The month of January 1980 was the springboard to a series of meetings in Freemont and in San Fran- cisco. Among the notables were senior reps from General Motors, Rockwell, Wang Industries, The Unit- ed States Air Force, Lockheed, TRW, The Sheraton chain, and many others too numerous to mention but of equal corporate stature. The host was The Organ- ization of Chinese Americans (OCA). With chapters in major cities The OCA has become an effective force in the advocacy office in Washington, D.C. It's goal are direct and simply put, that of seeing to it that the "majority" knows of the talent pools that exist within the Chinese American population in The United States, and to give equal consideration to these Chinese American for high level positions. These meetings are complex ones of logistics, content and dissemination. In order to accomplish the agendas successfully, all of the attendees and delegate...

. I February 1980 rfe ^ Southwest Chinese Journal 21 images by elsie lee huang I certainly hope that the merchants in the so called Chinatown area of Houston will take time to clean up their alleys and sidewalks before Marvin Zindler and/or the City Health Inspectors take a visit around Chartres Street and streets in and around that area crossing Chartres. Many people shopping and eating at the nearby restaurants and attending the theater are rapidly complaining about the odor and garbage they see and smell in that area! Is this necessary in our day and time? Of course, the answer is a big capital NO! The merchants are people that probably have personal pride, because they are of Chinese descent, but what about pride in their business appearance? Just by looking, I would have to guess that they all need some reminding that the Chinese people in and around the Houston area have gained great respect from the Houston Community in the last twenty years. Remember, it has not always been ...

February 1980 tS r£) 9# Southwest Chinese Journal 22 I The Message by Jmm* Dovm Uo*g There is a God in each of us.. for he made us in his own image. He captains the ship and maps the way..gen- erates the motor..steers the wheel..keeps the course. Although the journey is pleasant..at times the voy- age is rough..the storm clouds gather..the turbulence rages. Tossed and turned on a sea fraught with dangers., the lightning of temptations strike. But the God within each of his children speaks a louder voice than the winds and waves of angry waters. The captain at the helm main- tains the controls..disburses the orders. The ship is kept upright. Who is the captain of this ship of ours? Our conscience. It never forsakes us. Daily..faithfully serving..in every condition of life..even when the ship veers in to wrongful channels. Spiritually, it makes itself known. The conscience of the inner-being never abandons..the property of the captain..its savior. His children cannot leave this domain...
