Nashville West or Manhattan South? Austin Theater Boom Rivals Music Scene by Daryl lames Has the boom of regional theater that began in the '60's finally hit Austin? Or has it been here for some time and we just didn't notice it for the discos and honky-tonks? While we were waiting to become the Nashville West, have we in- stead become one of those way-off Broad- way theater districts that are revitalizing an art that had grown soggy on the Great White Wash? When the '60's began, theater in New York was a closed shop. Edward Albee was still off-Broadway. The starry-eyed lemmings that herded to the Mecca of Drama were stumbling over each other in the streets. Some went home vegetablized. Some, as Michael Ventura once noted, stayed and learned to be New Yorkers. But many stayed and tried to find an outlet for their creativity, or else migrated to places where the air was clearer (theatrically, at least). Places like Chicago. And Cincinatti. Frisco. Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. The ...

a I a a 11 WARREN ZEVON Austin Opry House, June 2 A keeps-ya-guessing sensibility no doubt honed by long penance-serving hours in his room without dinner for childish misdeeds; he has yet to grow up. That's his charm. Although he seems a likely can- didate, Zevon hasn't yet been cursed with the annual "next Dylan" benediction. Which means he probably won't try to be, thank God. Instead, he'll continue his globe trot- ting fantasies and Steve Martin-with- (accidental?)-poignance. Having writ- ten Poor, Poor Pitiful Me, Zevon knows the difference between mere titi 1 lation and sexual conflict. But does he care? He's part Groucho Marx, part Clint Eastwood, part Jackson Browne. Which means what? Pawn your grandmother's pacemaker if you must, but, don't be caught somewhere else. IViirrtTt ZftHM CATCH A RISING STAR Symphony Square Fridays, Saturdays through August ^Booked to play Symphony Square during this summer are some of the best performers Austin has to offer- people like Marcia Bal...

Richie Furay: Taking It Rock 'n' Roll by Barbara Ballinger Richie Furay's new band plays straight rock and roll, touched by few hints of the country sound he helped pioneer with Buffalo Springfield and Poco. But Furay's good-time exuberance, so integral a part of Poco's appeal, has survived the tran- sition. His set at the Armadillo was an impressively tight, driving performance charged with the band's class musician- ship and the kind of contagious delight that's generated by the best rock and roll performers. With a 12-album, five-group history to cover, Furay's opening numbers were straight rockers recorded since his 1973 departure from Poco. His new band, which has been together only two mon- ths, was great—John Mehler, punchy and precise on drums, Billy Batstone on bass, Gabriel Katona on assorted keyboards, and Charles Crews on lead guitar. Moving to a long medley of Poco and Buffalo Springield tunes--"You Better Think Twice," "Just for Me and You," "A Child's Claim to Fame," ...

■ TV Worth Watching Roil of Thunder, Hear My Cry . oi.W ;hcu] kM£W<()hi front tho !o hol.'l OH k> W'lrii Wt' ,hrjcJ.-no Arid .%♦ .,! '..ir «l by Demi Prentiss ABC's latest mini-series, "Roll of Thun- der, Hear My Cry" is a three-part family special scheduled to air June 2, 3, and 4. It bills itself as the story of an 11- year-old's growing up in the Mississippi of 1933. The 11-year-old is Cassie Logan, and the story she has to tell is less of any coming of age ritual than of her learning to see and understand the people around her more clearly. Cassie is black, the daughter of one of the few families in the area who own their own land. As she says early in the series, "One thing we knew right from the beginning--to hold onto what we had, no matter what. And what we had was land." This series is hardly of the grand scope that "Roots" was. But because of its narrower focus, there is time to dwell on the small moments that enrich a young girl's life, rather than leaping from one ...

f The Esther's Experience Everybody Into The Pool by Jeff Barton It is not yet even 7:30, the time that Fish Bait and the Night Crawlers will begin warming up for the main event, but already there is a steady stream of Austin- ites—and others—disappearing into the alley behind the 500-block of East Sixth Street. By the time the freewheel- ing Nightcrawlers have begun churning out their lively brand of original music, every seat in the house has long been taken. Ten minutes before show time, the only way into Esther's Pool is with a crowbar. But still they come. Two dollars a person they pay to sit on the floor, stand in the aisle, and hang from the ceiling. "We want to be a cheap theater, within people's budgets...because it's tradition with us and is a very important part of what we're doing." Every folding chair is taken; the bleachers on the east side of the room, next to a surreal mural, have made instant in- timates out of the strangers of an hour previous; hyperac- tive types ...
