Straight pretenders often pay high price or hiding sexuality Closets pack enormous amounts of danger per square inch; living phony lives takes heavy toll on everyone involved It's a new year — that's kick- ing off with reminders of an old, old habit. Living so deep in the closet that you have hangers for ear- rings is a time-honored way of getting through life. Hiding homo-ness has often been a wise, necessary move. Still is, sometimes. But hiding out has never been free of cost. Occasionally it costs more than a Lexus, a world cruise, and several rounds of Botox combined. Phyllis Gates paid a price, and she wasn't even gay. Gates, who died on Jan. 4 at 80 years old, was Rock Hudson's human shield, otherwise known as his wife. In 1955, as rumors about Rock being a man's man grew, she married him. "I was very much in love," she insisted to Sara Davidson, Hudson's biographer. "I thought he would be a wonderful husband. He was charming, his career was red-hot, he was gorgeous. How many...

life+stylestage What's opera with you? John Copley has spent more than 50 years directing operas at every corner of the globe. But next month, he has a wedding to get to By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer To say that John Copley enthusiastically talks about opera understates the energy that radiates from his eyes, his hands, his voice. Call it: "impish glee," and you're closer to capturing his sprightly passion. He's inclined to break into arias mid-sentence, to reenact past stagings with gusto, to recount war stories about some of the divas he's worked with or to repeat a racy limerick he shared with the stagehands the day before. After more than 50 years mounting produc- tions from Europe to Australia — including 12 for the Dallas Opera — Copley seems to wear the stress of his job with ease. But it's all an act. "It's terribly hard. It takes the most phenome- nal energy just keeping calm and keeping every- body happy," he says. Good directing is good organization, which maintains ...

B BUBBLE Director: Steven Soderbergh Cast: Debbie Doebereiner, Misty Dawn Wilkins and Omar Cowan Opens today at Landmark's Magnolia 1 hr. i'inlfn R New talent bursts forth Soderbergh !s high-def experiment paves way for low-budget indie fare By Steve Warren Contributing Film Critic Every weekend in hundreds, maybe thou- sands of cities, independent filmmakers are busy and armed with video cameras and computers. In the vast majority of cases, their work will be seen by no more than a handful of people, and the filmmakers will never be able to give up their day jobs to pursue their dream. It's not just a mat- ter of talent — the cream doesn't always rise to the top. Steven Soderbergh obviously misses those days. And until he runs out of numbers for "Oceans" movies, he'll have the money and the clout to return to them whenever he wants. "Bubble" finds him in an experimental mood bringing professional expertise to a high-defini- tion video shoot with non-professional actors on the Ohio-...

LESSON PLAN try's most important artists, and we can't talk about the structure of their dialogue except as an intellectual exchange?" It's no secret that Johns and Rauschenberg are gay. But there's a tendency to shift focus away from their sexual identity and their romantic relationship. And according to Katz, even Johns and Rauschenberg, who are both still alive, avoid queer analysis. Rauschenberg is fairly accessible and still does press. He lives in Florida and was inter- viewed for "60 Minutes" last year. But he refus- es to be interviewed by Katz. "When I did a show of his work at Yale, Rauschenberg refused permission to reproduce the work in the catalog," Katz says. Katz has interviewed Johns, "But the inter- view was cursory and not terribly friendly," he says. "Even today, neither of these men would identify as gay — not that they would disavow their relationship," Katz explains. Jonathan D. Katz, pictured, delivers a lec- ture entitled "Lovers & Divers: Interpictorial ...

Lady Sovereign "Vertically Challenged" Chocolate Industries It's never easy to tell whether the latest pop flash is genuine or hype. But for now, let's give Lady Sovereign the benefit of a doubt. Recently signed to Def Jam records, the 19-year-old tomboy just released an eight-song EP while a full-length debut is in the works. With a stumbling delivery — kind of like Missy Elliott meets the grimy, vintage beats of M.I. A. — the young MC has earned the atten- tion she's getting. And while her constant name- checking and sing-songy rhymes make Lady Sov a lightweight messenger, it's hard to resist her slick beats. Don't hand over the tiara to the self- professed queen just yet. But keep your ears open for the princess-in-training's next volume. KNOCK OUT 1ST EFFORT: Young tomboy rapper Lady Sovereign could be the next hip-hop sensation. CHEST WEAR, BEST WEAR Expect to see some eye-catching new T-shirts around Big D. Royal flush 'Urinetown' is tacky, silly — and one of the funniest musicals ever By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer In the liner notes of the cast recording of "Urinetown the Musical," author-lyricist Greg Kotis points out that the plot for his satire has never been done before. He then adds, "for obvious reasons." Set at and around the poorest, filthiest urinal in the city, it pokes fun at corporate greed, dopey romances, the musical come- dy format and a few thousand other targets. It doesn't sound like a mainstream commer- cial entertainment. And in truth, it isn't; "Urinetown" is much better. The action takes place in an unnamed Dickensian metropolis "sometime after the Stink Years" — a drought of such extreme that a single corporation, the Urine Good Company, has been entrusted by the gov- ernment with conserving water. That means criminalizing urination and defecation everywhere except in severely-taxed public pay toilets. The rabble begrudgingly consent to this iron-fisted rul...
