Thursday, July 28, 2005 - THE SACHSE NEWS - Section A - Page 3 Education Wylie trustees extend student dress code hours Officials to seek more input before moving to standardized clothing policy By Matthew Riley Following the dress code at all Wylie Independent School District schools during the school day is normal. When classes resume Aug. 15, students will have to fol- low the dress code even after the final bell rings. "Our local hoard changed the lime of the dress code," WISD spokesperson Susan Dacus said. "Always before it was the school day. Now they have changed it from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m." Other than extending the hours the dress code is in effect, there will be no change in the district's clothing policy this school year, Dacus said. "The only change to the dress code is it will be in enforcement from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.," she said. "When students are on campus from eight to five, they must fol- low the dress code." A switch to standardized dress will not happen in the 2005-06 s...

Managing Editor Donnita Nesbit Fisher Column Something fishy at the Mecca house Judy Truesdell Mecca Is it baseball that's supposed to be the "great American pas- time"? If so, I beg to differ. I think the great American pas- time is fishing. At the begin- ning of "The Andy Griffith Show," are Opie and Andy walking toward Mayberry's i baseball diamond with bats and 'gloves? "Goh-ally" (said in a Gomer accent) no. They've got poles and a bucket and arc heading down to the fishing hole. Y'all can let me know if this is just my family, and there arc no fishing poles leaning up against the skeletons in your closets. I {1 ? Page 2 - Section B - THE SACHSE NEWS - Thursday, July 28, 2005 ■■■■Mi HSeMWMMf Volleyball team takes aim at another title By Greg Ford The Sachse volleyball season officially begins Aug. 9, when the Lady Mustangs hit the floor at Piano in a 7 p.m. contest. That leaves little time for head coach Rikki Williamson to get her team ready. In fact, considering that practice begins Monday, Aug. 1, she and the Lady Mustangs will have less than 10 days to prepare. However, don't get the impres- sion she is overly concerned about the short practice time. For one thing, the Lady Mustangs, the defending District 11-5A champi- ons, return a majority of their starters, so team chemistry should not be a problem. Also, Williamson isn't placing a high premium on winning pre-dis- trict contests. "The preseason, before district, all the games, it's just practice," she said. Naturally. Williamson wants to grab up a few victories before the start of the district season. However, true success for ...

July 28, 2005 - THE SACHSF NEWS Section B - Page 3 Wylie camp serves up tennis for beginners * • By Greg Ford Michelle Vicira wants to see Wylie High School develop a top- notch tennis team. A year ago, the Pirates finished second in its district. However, standing between them and first place was Highland Park, a two-time defending state champion, and, arguably, one of the elite high school programs in the nation. So, how do the Pirates reach and surpass the blue and gold jugger- naut? Well, it won't happen overnight. In order to achieve that goal Wylie must develop a strong feeder system, something is non- existent right now. This past week, Vicira, an assis- tant coach with the Wylie varsity, oversaw something that could change all that, as well as "grow" the sport within the community. That something was a one-week summer tennis camp, which is being overseen by the Department of Parks and Recreation. It was the second session of the c...

"A lot of people don't check to see if there's been repair work in the ceil- ing or walls to indicate if there's been any repair work or water leaks," Wilcox said. "They should always check the foundations and be aware of floors rolling slightly as it indi- cates the foundation is sinking." With mobile homes, Wilcox sug- gests paying attention to the flooring. "Flooring is a big thing," he said. 'The biggest thing is make sure they are holding up properly and they aren't deteriorating any faster." The last bit of advice Wilcox has is to buy a bigger home than you plan to. "Make sure you buy more home than you need because you're going to outgrow it faster than you think," he said.
