PROTECTIVE HIGH TARIFF [Newspaper Article] — The Canberra Times — 24 September 1926

PROTECTIVE HIGH TARIFF Within the la.s-t ten years a fine upstanding automobile manufacturing industry has boen bulli up in Canada under the protection of a high tariff against foreign built motor vehicles, which has been a very fine tiling for the people connected with the industry. On the other hand Canada needed cheap transportation. Protests loud and deep against the high prices of motor cars poured in on the Govern- ment, which was placed in the position ol'' having to make a choice between a most promising industry and glv lng the people as a whole, cheap trans- put tatlun. The Canadian authorities sacrificed the- industry to the general need ol transpotl, by reducing the tariff on motor vehicles apd making ¡t possible for motor vehicles to be purchased at a price below the figure at which I hey could lie built and sold by the Canadian factories. In the end, the Canadian handling ot the problem will undoubtedly bring the greatest good for the greatest number. Aust- ralia needs...

CARE OF OIL FILLER STRAINERS [Newspaper Article] — The Canberra Times — 24 September 1926

CARE OF OIL FILLER STRAINERS The gauze strainer in the engine oil filler becomes in time choked with dirt jollected by the oil on it, but more so by Hie carbon from burnt oil. This in U.self wastes tjme when filling up wlt|i oil, but a more important point is that as the oil filler vent is also used as an engine breather it is ne- cessary to keep (he strainer clean in order not to prevent Its proper action as such. The strainer should be removed oc- casionally and cleaned out with kero- sene or with hot water and soda. .On no account should the tiller cap be altered to prevent the free pas- sage of air. Should it ho lost, any temporary replacement should either be drilled or fluted so that the breather action will not'be'prevented.
