OUR WATER SUPPLY. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 29 October 1895

OUR WATER SUPPLY. \ TO THE EDITOR. , v Sir,— I notice there'is a great cry but about a water supply not being obtain able for the mines and town of Han nans. This statement is freely made by new chums that do not knovr the resources of the district. About 18 mouths ago we had fully twice the population on this field that we have to-day, yet there was plenty of water for all. At that time we had no Mc Donald's well or Government bore, and other sources of supply that we have to-day. It may suit some of the miuing sharks that are knocking about here to have every mining venture knocked out, or brought down to a low. value so they can get in. 1 am aware that just at present there is a scarcity of condensed water, but in a week- or 'tiro, that will be a thing of the past, for there are plenty of condensers going up, and good drinking |Water will'soon be back to the old price of 3d. per gallon, and if the Government would only go in for one or more reservoirs to the west, north or' east ...

Municipal Council. STORMY GATHERING. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 29 October 1895

Municipal Council. STORMY GATHERING. The Municipal Council held a special meeting; on Friday, to take into consideration the sanitation of. the city. The Mayor, Or Wilson, pre sided and there were also present, Crs Lee, M'Tvenzie and Fimister. The discussion proceeded amicably until one of the Councillors accused the acting-Town Clerk, Mr A. H. Bart lett, of favouritism in not proceeding against two of the hotel-keepers under the Health Act, by laying informations for keeping their back yards in a most insanitary state. Either great favor itism had been shown or the sanitary inspector was absolutely incompetent. The hotel yards to which he had re ferred were most malodorous, and all sorts of offences seemed to be com mitted with impunity. The Town Clerk denied the charge and dared the Councillor to make specific charges, giving the dat«s and nature of the offences of which he complained. As this was not done the Town Clerk withdrew from the meeting. It was decided to proceed against...

PROSPECTING NOTES [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 29 October 1895

PROSPECTING NOTES By Tramp. May I be pardoned for suggesting the following formula for panning a prospect. 8o few amateurs have got either theory or practice in connection with this most useful and. necessary method of testing a find. Take your gold dish up lightly,- hand on each side, and cover dirt therein from a vessel with standing water. Then pro ceed to wash the most of the mud and clay out by giving the dish a good, stirring, rotary motion, and running the dirty water off. A fresh dip after each run off will give clearer water for repeating the process. The mud hav ing1 been cleared more care, must bo taken. The motion should still be rotary, with a sharp jigging, the left hand lowered a trifle, and grasping the dish tightest, and the motion being (imperceptibly almost) more towards the left, which will cause the heavi;st minerals to accumulate in that corner. The lighter material can gradually be coaxed over the month of the dish \-y an occasional light dip and wash of the d...

New South Wales THE SMALL-POX ON THE ;: ^ j CUZCO. REV. J. CLARKE AGAIN. CREATES A DISTURBANCE IN ST. ANDREWS CATHEDRAL. Sydney, October 27. - There is reaion to fear that the out break of small-pox on the Cuzco will be a great deal more severe than was at first expected. Owing to the recent developments the ship will not be handed over to the agents for an in definite time. ,; , ?:. ../';? . The Hev. J. Clarke, who has rendered himself notorious for some time past, to-day attended service; at St. Andrew's Cathedral, and created a disturbance by shouting out. at the top of his voice. The precentor felt it Uiis drity.-to take notice of his strange conduct, and so gave him into custody wi^h the result that Clarke, who was removed by the police, will be charged to-morrow with disturbing the congre gation. Later. It appears that the refractory clergyman, the Rev. J. Clarke, pur posely created the scene in St. An drew's Cathedral yesterday, in order to' pay back a grudge which he bore ag...

KALGOORLIE MINER PUBLISHED DAILY. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1895. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 29 October 1895

KALGOORLIE MINER PUBLISHED DAILY; TUESDAY, -OCTOBER 29, 1895. Whrrkveb the Englishman goes he finds something at which to grumble, and the town of Kalgoorlie during the last few days lias furni.-hed no exception, . to th« rule. Yesterday the strojng- hot winds blowing dust freely through the town brought down the maledictions' of the suffering- towns people, but dust storms being of some what rare occurrence cannot be con sidered a stock 'subject' upon which to indulge . this inordinate passion for grumbling. The question upon, which, however, all are agreed at this present time as a ground for complaint, is that of the watar supply. Why ? Because it is just there that the shoe pinches. People who scarcely ever trouble them selves about the matter at all during the winter, many persons who have re aided in the district but a lew days, clamour loudly against the ^Government;. r for their laxity in this direction* Why was the clam oring not as loud three months or more ago? Because at...
