THE Government Gazette, containing the particulars of the land to be sold in Ieelong, on the 1thk'February, has at last ma!e its appearance; but when we are to be favoure with the charts and plans is still problematical. The management of the land sales is, like every other function of Government, becoming more and more deranged. 'fire series "of sales just concluded in Melbourne, appears to have been marked by many unsatisfactory features. There were more than the usual number of with drawals, while whole parishes were put up without obtaining a lid, showing that either bad judgment in fixing the upset price had been displayed, or that sham applicants had been attended to, while we know that real applicants cannot obtain a favourable reply.

LATE E?GLTSH ŽEwS. The Joshua, arrivel last night, brings news to the 5th Norember. Owing, however, to the very rational arrange ment of the government with regard to the boar:ing of. 1A. W~ TErr ia the M3elbourne IHerald maintains that there is a close analogy between the state of Europe at the pre -ent time, and at the time when Spanish America was peopled; and infers that we may look for the same results--de noraliratiio of all kinds, including Luccaneeing. Certainly we do not adopt these ex treme views; but we hold that the go vernment ought to be on the alert to check any TENDENCY to such a state of things. If, as is probable, we shall have more thin a due proportion of the scrum of European Esciety Frored upon us, it oiihlt to be the policy of the government to plant anr! encourage the growth of a FIXED virtuous population. This can never be accomplished by our govern ment unless it adopts another system. Neither can it Le Eccured by any armed interference. At present the government not only practically places the criminal anl the honest man on a level, but, by the absence of adequate poice regulation, actually clff:rs the olods in f.vouir of crime. In such...
