The preliminary business of the Conference of the plenipotentiaries of the European Powers has been concluded. No formal reso lution has yet been drawn up. General Ignatieff lias informed Lord Salis bury, the English representative at the Con ference at Stamboul, that Russia would accept a Swiss or Belgian occupation (of Bulgaria. The suggestion has been forwarded to the English Government, who have not yet replied to it.

Thursday. 21st December. Before D. Pyne, Esq., J.P. TRESPASS ON ENCLOSED LANDS. J. L. Waugh v George Nicholls. — This was a complaint that defendant did, on or about the 8th instant, unlawfully enter upon, enclosed lands of plaintiff. Mr. Crommelin appeared for the plaintiff ; defendant pleaded not guilty. Plaintiff deposed : The contents of my in formation are true ; T am the lessee of the racecourse paddock, which is enclosed land ; I never gave defendant leave to enter into the land.' Arthur Matthews deposed : I am a miner, residing in Grenfell ; I remember being at the racecourse paddock on Monday, 1 1 th instant ; I saw defendant there early in the morning, about 5 o'clock ; I saw six head of bullocks in the paddock ; defendant rode round the paddock, and then tied his horse away from the tence ; he then came over to it, pulled a piece out of the top of the post, and let the top rail down ; it was not the usual slip-rail ; he jumped five of the bullocks over the bottom rail ; I...

CHURCH OF ENGLAND TEMPER ANCE ASSOCIATION. The regular monthly meeting in connection with this Society was held, as usual, in tho Holy Trinity Church. The building was comfortably filled, tho fair sex being largely in tbe majority. The President occupied the chair. In accordance with an established custom, the meeting was opened with praise and prayer, after which tho President read a por tion of Scripture, 2nd and 3rd verses of tho first chapter of Lamentations, and' -read an extract from a Commentary, bearing on the portion of Scripture selected. The minutes of tho previous meeting were read nnd confirmed. POLICE COURT. Tuesday, 19th December. Before D. Pyne, Esq., J.P. STRAY PIGS. Police v Henry Blundell. — This was a case arising out of a similar one on Tuesday last, in which the then defendant swore that Blundell was the owner of the three pigs for which he had been summoned as allowing to stray. Defendant pleaded guilty, and said that he owned the pigs. Constable Thompson stated that he had seen defendant immediately upon the conclu sion of the previous case against ii'arbrother, when he said ' I have had no- pigs this long I time ; I bought a sow from Farbrother, but I had another transaction with him and gave the sow back to him ; lam not the owner of any . pigs.' I asked him was he the owner of any pigs in November last, but he said ' No ;' I asked him if he w.as the owner of any pigs at the present time, he said ' I don't own any pigs I also asked his wife if they owned any pigs, and she said they did not. Sir, — Having recontly arrived in this district, and being engaged in making a tour through the colonies, I am desirous of eliciting as much information on the habits, pursuits'; and general characteristics of tho inhabitants of tho various towns and districts visited by me, as it is possible to procure. 1 have endea voured hitherto to make enquiries from indi viduals, but on comparing notes, with a view to their duo arrangement,' I whs made pain fully aware of the fact that 1' was only a ' new chum,' and therefore the lawful victim of tho would-be facetious, who desired to im pose on tho simple credulity of a' poor orphan.'
