Another Fourth-estater. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 16 October 1903

Another Fourth-estater. We are in ^receipt °f the first issue of :;fche ' Esk Re cord,' a weelfty paper from the press of Messrs. May & Nagel, of Ipswich-street, Esk. The sheet issutd is of double demy size, and consists of a considerable number of ad: vertisments and nine columns of reading matter. It will not' ! be a party to the opening up; i of the fiscal q testion at the j forthcoming elections, and in i connection with the politics of j this State it looks with hope! on the future of Queensland \ under the regime of the Mor- 1 gan Ministry. We wish, i though an infant ourselves, ! this youngster every success j in its future, aye, even better than has been our lot for the first quarter, and we have no need to complain. There is no reason why the ' Record' should not be a power for good in so thriving a district as the Upper Brisbane River valley.

Federal Parliament. THE MAIL STEAMERS AND RIFLE CLUBS. MR. WILKINSON'S SPEECH. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 16 October 1903

Federal Parliament. THE HAIL STEAMERS AND RIFLE CLUBS. Mr. Wrucixsox's Speech. ' I have ven- little to say except to en dorse the remarks which have fallen from the honorable member for Maranoa, the honorable and learned member tor Dar ling Down?, and the honorable and learned member for Brisbane, with regard to what I regard as an injustice to Queens Ian d. When the mail steamers arrive at Adelaide they land their mails, which are then conveyed to the various centres by rail. If it were desired to invite alterna tive tenders the shipping companies should have been requested to state the cost of services which would end at Adelaide or extend to Melbourne, or Sydney, or Brisbane. The people of Queensland feel aggrieved because Bris bane has been specially singled out. I believe that within the next- twenty-five years the most populous part of Australia will be that tract of country which lies be tween Twofold Bay and Bnndaberg.-and which is perhaps the choicest part of the Continent....

OUR ESSAY. SELFISHNESS. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 16 October 1903

OUR ESSAY. SELFISHNESS. (Bv-Skcuxous.) We know of no principle that pene trates uud directs the trend of human thought so much as the principle of self ishness. It is the ven- opposite of the principles of righteousnessatid self-denial. and consequently tends to wron«-doing. Visitor!) from other lands tell us that 'we' are ^eiw^usly disposed, . ami, know no limit excepting an empty saitrand bare table.' Whether that is true or not, we know there is a disposition to help which ! is right if done judiciously, and a willing- ? ness to be generous which when pressed j to a practical issue betrays a selfish j motive* either to be thought benevolent , and kind, or to receive some compensa tion in material things. ' But even in this land abounding in wealth and good things, with it abundant charities, there are many people who have no thought beyond their own comfort. They dis regard the voice of suffering; there is no sorirow that touches them but their own. an'jl they care not who swims ...

District News. Caboolture. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 16 October 1903

Disfcriefc - - - - j^ews. ? :o: ? (Bv Our Owx Correspondents.) Cabcolture. Anniversarj7 services in con nection with the Methodist Sunda}--school here were held on Sunday, the 4th instant. Excellent sermons were de livered by the Rev. C.C. True man, the circuit minister, his subject in the evening being ' The Bible in State Schools.' The church was beautifully decorated, this being the work of the teachers and friends. A public meeting was to have been held on the following Monday evening, but on ac count of heavy rain falling, it had to be postponed till the Friday night following, when prizes were given to about 70 scholars. A good programme of sacred music, songs, recita tions, and a splendid dialogue by a number of young ladies, was gone through. A very cheering report was read show ing the progress of the school during the year. Three teachers and six scholars, out of a total of ten competitors, gained certificates in the Sun day-school TJ ni on examinations liuring the year. I...

Palmwoods. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 16 October 1903

Palmwoods. I On Tuesday, October 6th, tihe Agricultural Department sent an agent to Palmwoods to jjrocure five tons of goose rjerries. He arrived by the liiorning train 'from Brisbane, fiiid was met by a srood num ber of gooseberry growers, 13 j or 14 of whom decided to sup ply the amount: required ; but tlley were nfther disappointed, as the}- expected to have to supply 10 to 15 tons. The pflice given by the department is|i|d. perlb., the growers to pd}' the freight. There is an enormous crop of berries in this district, and if the depart- j mtnt can find a market for them, it will raise the farmers' hopes for another season. It ce|tainh- deserves the trial the department is giving it. Dn Friday night the Rev. T. Brassington gave a lecture in aid of the church funds at Pa mwoods. There was only | a moderate attendance, owing no I doubt to the counter at traction in aid of the hospital ! wh|ch was being held at Mont vilie that night.
