OPEN COLUMN. Names of the ivriters must accompany com .iimnications that may require verification. TO THE EDITOR OF THE 11IVERIKE ORAZIER. Sin,— I have, witji regret, seen a letter (or something) in your paper, of the 20th instant, signed 'Arabella,' reflecting on the managing stewards of the late races held at Hay.' The reason may be that he was not allowed to be a steward, or even a member . of the Hny Jockey Club; he has shown this to be the case by stating that' some friend of his (in pity I presume) offered him a ticket thnt he might ascend the grand turkey' roost, of which he cackles so much. He next states that be rcluscd the ticket. (Query?) . I think no friend would advise' anything ' so unnatural— (geese do not roost!) The stairs and rope handrail, we' know, were not good'ou the first day; but the two days 'be/ore tho races were so wet, that the contractors had not'suflicient time to pro perly complete thejobbefore tho^firsl race was announced, nudibad to retire after doin...

TO THE EDITOR OF THE RIVERINE GRAZIER. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 27 May 1874

: TO THE EDITOn OP THE RIVERINE GltAZIEIl. Sin,— At a meeting called in this town some time back, to arrange for a medical man to live in this place, a suggestion was made by Mr. Chrysfal, of Muliirulu Station' tu establish a cottage hospital under 'the hands of .the medical man who receives the guarantee of £z5l) per annum, iu addition to his own charges, but the com mittee overruled itat the time, and left the Lie. Vac. Phys. Surg. Glas.-toleada lire of enaction. Since then, most neisons liuvu come to the conclusion that it is a pity it imu uui, . ih:l-ii .-*i urraugeu, even at a ntue more cost. Fortunately, it is not yet too late, as the agreement with the gentleman was only for a short time, and the great boon to the hard-working men in 'this district, -who, at present; have to go in most cases, should they require hospital attendance, into Victoria, at a great deal more suticrinjr and expense than they would were the com mittee. to start one in this town. At present, a large su...

BALRANALD. .: ? (l'ROJI A COIUIESPOXDNT.) ?? ?.:.'? - ' ' . ? M»y 20th, 1874. Hitherto our lonely hnmlet has been governed by the rule of thumb to an unmerciful extent, and I, as the exposco ot the gubcnmtional personal of this would-be thriving township have, of course, many serious obstacles to contend with, nevertheless let the consequences bo what they may. I am determined to expose the frailties of our rulers, local and fprcign. We have an npproach to the town commenced, and well commenced, hut unfor tunately the contractors have hvon mirkinrr in Uin niMat. of n cloud of darkness— tho inspector being nnn oat. I am iiilbrmed that telegrams requesting instructions have been forwarded day after day, no doubt, to the great in terference of other public business, enquiring the where abouts of this necessary oflicial, still his exact locationis not definitely known. ' SYDNEY. ' ? ?'? ? (FROM OUH OWN C&ItRESrONDEXT.) , ..?? ? . May 22nd, 1874. Tlie Electoral Bill lias boon sent up to the' Legislative Council. ? On Wednesday, in. tlie Assembly, a last attempt was 'made by Mr Uarrett ty obtain a recommittal of the bill ; and Mr Nelson delivered another protest against the clause which requires a naturalised subject to be two years in the country after naturalisation, before he can exercise the privileges of elector or representative. This clause is defended on the ground, that by the law of New South Wales the Govern ment may issue letters of naturalisation to an alien immediately on. his landing, while by the law of England an alien must reside five years in the kingdom before he cah.be naturalised ; so that the difference between the colony and tlie mother country is this : — ; here, an alien may be naturalised on tho day he lands — -if the Executive see fit-— and may at once purchase land and become a large freeholder, but he must ivait...

MELBOURNE. May 23rd, 1874. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 27 May 1874

MELBOURNE. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) May 23rd, 1874. The eighth Parliament of Victoria was opened on Tuesday last, with all the imposing ceremonies which usually attend such an august event. Tho day previous their Honors Judges Barry andMolesworth. acted as Commissioners and swore in the several members. Whether it was from excitement or negligence, or from the fact that a hoax was played on him by some humourous mem bor, it will not be known till the delinquent goes to confession, but certain it is that, for once in his life, Judge Barry made a grand blunder, and soiled his starched neck-tic not a little. He had forgotten his little speech iir the pocket of his every day brooks, and '. just as he was about to open Parliament someone placed in nis hands a printed copy of what had been spoken last Parliament, and ho read on, not knowing what he was saying, and giving notice that His Excel lency would meet the House on 22nd April, at one o'clock, and give his reasons for calling t...
