ON THE EUROPEAN NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph, St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian — 15 September 1866

ON THE EUROPEAN NEWS. We Victorians breathe somewhat more freely again. The-prompt arrival of the English July mail .has relieved us from the weight of suspense which its immediate predecessor had placed us under. ,The onward march' of the War-demon over tihe Efi-peodif continent has been stayed, and the horrors, misery, and devastation that follow in its train ha;a been confined .to the Powers who firse. evoked .its aid. Other nations-England especially-haore iot yet been sucked iito the awful whirlpool, and so far as our news go, the re-establishmient of peace seems very probable. The crush ing' defeat w'hich Austria received at the hands of Pruissia drove her to seek the good offices of the French Emperor'to obtain from her victorious rival a peace. The ap iilication wassdccomaanied bv the cession of Venetia to F'rance-an act wvhich was not unnaturally looke, upon by the. Italian King arid lpeople' as a studied insult, and greatly infuriated them. The "mani of destiny"-ndt tlhe l...
