The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, JULY 15, 1880. THE ELECTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 July 1880

THURSDAY, JULY 15, 1880. TIHE ELECTIONS. After keeping Sur columns open to a late hour last night for the latest news about the elections, we had to go to press without receiving any de finite information on the subject. We can only suppose that the operators were too busy attending to the more important centres of population to look after an unimportant place like Warragul, or that our telegram was lodged too late. At all events we were disappointed. Indirectly we heard some of the results, but as none of the news was authentic, we do not pub lish any of it, as we might mislead, and in preference to running a risk of so doing, we remain silent. As far as we could gather, the Liberals had the best of it by five or six seats out of about fifty-six; but as the returns from most of country constituencies would be incomplete, nothing can be positively- stated as yet. In North Gippaland the polling was pretty close, the returns to hand last night placing McLean ahead, with McKean second,...

COCKEREL'S POTATO PLOUGH. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 July 1880

COCKEREL'S POTATO PLOUGHI The above named implement, which has been advertised in our columns for some time past, promises to be in strong demand next season. Several trials of the plough have been made by Mr. W. Bradley, of BrandyCreek, the last one taking place about a fort night since, when the ground, owing to the long-continued wet weather, was in such at condition that the new invention was subjected to a very   severe test. But notwithstanding this, the implement gave such satisfactory proof of its usefulness, that many of the "practical tillers of the soil" who witnessed the trial declared their in. toentions of becoming purchasers prior to next year's operations. Mr. Brad loy informed us that a saving of about four shillings and six pence per ton can be effected by using the potato plough, and amongst the list of advan tages which he enumerated, the two most important, after that of the re duced cost of digging, are, that the potatoes are turned out of the grou...

THE EDENHOPE OUTRAGE. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 July 1880

THE EDENHOPE OUTRAGE. On receipt of your telegram I left N?rra coorte and proceeded at once to Edenhope, but the execrable condition of the roads caused considerable delay. It appears that on Sunday' Mr. Hearne, J.P., when coming from church at Edenhope, was bailed up at the end of the village by a man named Reilly, whi presented a gun and threatened to kill Hearne if he did not, give him £100. The icircumstances are bost explained by the statement of Constable John William Balchin, who is .in charge of the police al Edenhope. He says :-" On Sunday, the 11th, Mr. E F. . Hearne, J.P., and his family were returning from chapel at Edenhopein a buggy. As they neared the east end of the village a man named William Reilly ran from his house, stopped the buggy and pro senting a double-barrelled gun at Hearne. told him to stand or he would fire and shoot him dead.- He stood near the shoulders of the horses and pointing the gun at Hearne demanded £100. Hearne hadhot themoney on him, and he a...

A SONG FOR THESE TIMES. (A parody on "A Song for the Times," which appeared in a Con servative contemporary on Wednes day, 14th July.) Air.--"Babies on Our Block." And now you've done your duty For the land we live in, boys, And hav'n't sent ba1ck Service, Gillies, Bent, or such like toys ; Who'd have sold you, brother voters, And ruined all our trade, Though they made you many a promise, With the hope of getting paid. Ah : There's Service, Bent and Gillies, And old Francis all abreast ; WE'VE O'Shanassy and Deakin, So we do not mind the rest Of the Ministerial loafers, Seeking nought but place and pay ; If the Liberals went to blazes. What would they care P I say. Chorus Then cheer, Brothers! Cheer! For we've surely made it plain That Service and his party Will not rule the land again.
