OUR ILLUSTRATION. MR. W. L MURDOCH [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 22 April 1882

OUR ILLUSTRATION. MR. W. L MURDOCHo in. WILLIAM LLOYD MURDOClH wao born at Snudhurst, Victoria, in 1t55, and is, therefore, 26 years of ago. His educa tion was suficiently sue ecssful to euble him to become in time an at torney of the Supreme Court, &e. Bat to ensure eminence as a lawyer, undivided attention to business is required, and Mr. Mlurdoch probably finds the green sward more to his taste than parchments and pro. cesses. Personally, Mr. Murdceh is of average stature, and well built,. giving the impreasion of great activity and power of endlurance, which is fully borne out on seeing himn in the field. , Mr. Murdoch did not show much form with the bat until his first experience in England, but, as a wicket-.keeper, he wnas remarkably brilliant, and many were the conten - tions s to whether he or Mlr. Agricultural. THE POULTRY YARD. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 22 April 1882

* tgrivirutuval. THE POULTRY YARD. People write and ask which is the best of thovariousthoroughbred breedsofpoultry. As often said, thereisno "best" breed; location, climate and purpose for which the' fowls are desired must beconsidered. In thecold portions of California delicate varieties are not desir able, nor are those with large combs and pendant wattles; the hardier Brahmas and Cochins are required for success. Throughout the greater part of this State, however, other breeds often prove better adapted. If for egg production, which must always form the main feature of all hen-farms at distant points, the Leghorns, Houdans, Black Spanish and IHIam. burgs are suitable. Between these trecds there is little to choose, though the Leghorns are, perhaps, the most popular at present. Persons who are thinking of goine into the poultry business on any extended scale should carefully consider their location. The problem of transportation is dillicult to solve. IMany parts of the State whe...

MY RIVAL. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 22 April 1882

IlY RIVAL. A stray sheep has wandered down to the towing.-path, and stands gazing at us with ns toniahment, not unmixed with grave reproof. Overhead, two larks are singing, in emulouo rivalry of one another, little quivering specks of melody, far up in the blue sky. " Lap. lap" goes the water under the keel; thle towing-rope dips in and out as our boat rocks gently on the bosom of old Father Thames. Over there, across that cross.eropt stretch bf pasture-land, I can see the reapers--can hear the jingle of belled bridles as the stout horses carry the last loadof hay down a dis tant lane. A rabbit rucns out of a clump of bracken, and makes off as my little dog Dandle begins to bark at him. When is Will coming back, I wonder? It is quite an hour since he fastened the towing rope to a stump and started across country, with a hopeful heart and an empty bottle, in search of a cottage and an old woman who keeps a cow; And if that cow has not a pre. judice against being milked at unseasonabl...

The Advertiser. PUnLISrHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY AnD SATURDAY MoIlolING. Dairnsdale, Saturday, Apdril 22, 1882. PosTAL reform is one of the first mat ters which we are promised by tile Government shall be attended to next session, and as we have no doubt but that the proposals .for thle reduction on charges for postage which they will submit will be agreed to by tile House, the public at large will soon have cause to be thankful to MIr. L. L. Smith for the persistent manner in which hle has advocated postal reform for so many years. .It is true that many reductions havre taken place in the past which tend to prevent the benefits of those proposed being now effected from being so fully realised and appreciated as they other wise would have been. So many facili ties through tlhemedium of postal cards and invoices being franked for Id. have hitherto been accorded the public, that the reduction of Id. on the rates for posting letters will not be so fully felt as under the old regime b...
