The Darling Downs Gazette, DRAYTON, THURSDAY, DEC. 23, 1858. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 23 December 1858

The Darling Downs Gazette. DRAYTON, THURSDAY, DEC. 23, 1858.       THE great wars in which Great Britain has been of recent years engaged, the embers of one still burning under an Indian sun, have produced something like an unhealthy condition of the public mind, which is shown in a longing for exciting intelligence, and a positive indifference   to the prosaic events of ordinary colonial life. So at present complaints are heard on every side of the dullness of times, and the consequent dull- ness of their reflectors. The charge must be admitted, but only by comparison; in the state of civilization which a great portion of the world has reached, event follows event with wonderful rapidity, and nearly every day of the modern world has its history. Even in this remote corner of the earth, we have not been wholly unmindful of the means to relieve the monotony of every-day life. Ere another week shall have elapsed, the Christmas festiv...

VARIETIES. MEN'S FASHIONS. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 30 December 1858

VARIETIES. MKVS FASHIONS. I wish to give Mr. Kd., the fashion* of men, Tknuighodt all the land, of nine out of ten - Shabby cabbage tree hat, long ribbon so silly, And on Sunday perhaps a rusty black billy; Bay-men wear cap*, looking to militaiie. Impose on u* girls their blank saucy air; A cuble jacket so short, I'm ashamed of its cut. Or a 'sack ' without shape, like aa nabuatl'd slat * Waist sqaaerad in so tight, with black belt and buckle, let they complain of cur crin and our bustle. Spindle-shanks hidden in long leather boots Drawn over all, with the weak wit of hirsute* To make believe there's a calf, only bid from our gnzg. While trf tee tbe whole man'« bat a call is a haxs : Face covcr'd with hair, moustache and imperial. They !---k to bewitching, they think quite ceteUial ; ll- think them men monkeys, and wonder to bear Words coming articulate, 'tis ao clear That the ourang oulang hu taken man'* place, For of man's human image there's hot left a trace.
