CLOSE TENDERING AND COMBINES. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 February 1914

CLOSE TENDERING AND COMBINES. Master Builder McDonald, of Melbourne, in the course of his evidence before the Brick Commission remarked on the keenness of the competition among builders. On a £30,000 job, he explained, there was only a difference of £ 16 between his tender and that of another contractor. The combine had such a strong hold that it would take a lot to knock them out. He would like to see the contractors combine to manufacture bricks. The Commonwealth Government wants an Engi neer-in-Chief for the Railways. The salarv is £1800, and applications close on April 21. The property known as 'Stewart Dawson's Cor ner,' Collins and Swanston Streets, has been pur chased by Mr. Stewart Dawson, at about £90.000.

AUSTRALIA LEADS! A BRITISH TRIBUTE TO OUR INSTITUTE [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 February 1914

~. AUSTRALIA LEADS ! A BRITISH TRIBUTE TO OUR INSTITUTE 'The. Sanitary Record and Municipal Engineer ing,' a British professional journal of note, writes in reference to the Institute in its issue of Decem ber _2G:— ? The Local Government Engineers in Australia, who have banded themselves together in the ? Institute of Local Government Engineers of Australasia, are a virile body. They know how to assert their powers, and eclipse similar insti tutes in the Old Country in this respect. Thus it appears from our enterprising contemporary, 'The Local Government Journal of Australasia,' that the New South' .Wales Section of the Insti tute have succeeded in bringing those Councils which were not compelled to engage permanent qualified Engineers — because their revenues were less than £3000 per annum— to see the expedi ency and economy in engaging only qualified men. 'The case of qualified v. unqualified men,' it is stated, 'was put squarely before them, and they invariably agreed to the wi...

"MEN OF JUSTICE." [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 February 1914

- . 'MEN OF JUSTICE.' 'Absurd'' chooses his own title and writes : — 'The first thing you notice on opening the annual report of Wollongong Council (N.S.W.), is the number — I was going to say superfluity — of J's.P. The Mayor is a J.P., the Town Clerk is a J.P., and there are three among the councillors whose ambi tions ran in that direction — either that, or blushed to find their names in the newspapers one morring while wrestling with the grilled wares of the local butchers. 'Now a J.P. title might look well in a testimonial from the local' residents, but it is entirely out of place in an annual report. After viewing that front page of the booklet, I wouldn't be surprised if a proposition were introduced for the council to wear some distinguished-looking uniform, and* the Mayor give tone to proceedings by wearing a pow dered wig. 'It would be better, however, if the council dis played less title and more justice. The auditor's report refers to the under-paying and the over workin...

A NATIONAL ROADS CONFERENCE. The Institute Leads the Way. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 February 1914

A NATIONAL ROADS CONFERENCE. The Institute Leads the Way. Roads bear more vital relation to the national weal of Australasia than, perhaps, to any other continent. Our very expansiveness, geographical situation, and the fact that we draw our wealth from the soil, account for this. Roads, in their arterialj relation to the centres of distribution, are among the1 chief factors of our national development. Bad roads, therefore, mean national waste; good roads, profitable accumulation of the outcome of our .., The builders of good.roads. are the qualified local ' .government engineers, the great bulk of, whom are embraced in the membership of the Institute of Local Government Engineers of Australasia. It is, therefore, fitting that the problem in all its complex phases should be studied in a corporate manner by the Institute. This aspect has appealed to the .various governing councils of the Institute for some time. The first step in the direction of providing a solution upon a practica...

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 February 1914

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE. The Editor of 'Building' has requested me to pen a message to the members of my Association who have just honored me with election as their President. I have great pleasure in taking advan tage of this custom- (established by 'Building'), because the 'publicity, and influenc© of the press, judiciously. used, can do a great deal towards bring ing us into closer touch and united action on those questions which are most important to our indi vidual and collective welfare. It is but fitting that I should first of all pay a tribute to the very able way in which my predeces sor, Mr. G. P. Jones, junl, carried out the duties of his office. The work of the past year was exceed ingly strenuous, entailing great sacrifices which were cheerfully made, and the interests of the Association were looked after with conspicuous ability. I trust being able, in some measure, to attain his standard. In taking office, I know that I will have the hearty co-operation and support of...

Architects, Builders and Engineers EARL GREY AND TOWN PLANNING. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 February 1914

Architects, Builders and Engineers EARL GREY AND TOWN PLANNING. A further instance of the influential recognition given the Town Planning Association was supplied by the arrivaf of a wire froni Earl Grey in response to a message of welcome from President John Sulman. The distinguished British statesman sincerely wished the Association every success, and will in all probability also respond to an invitation to address members of the Association in Sydney. ? ' * The favorable impression created by the Association is being instanced in the increasing membership. It is a plane upon which masters and men can meet with the one common object Jn view, as, it .is non-political in all its principles. 'The 'programme 'for presentation 'to the Premier by a deputation has been drawn up. It is hoped to meet the Premier shortly after his return from New Zealand. PRESIDENT W. WILLIAMSON, N.S.W.
