NO PETROL TAX FOR ROADS On 15th May last the following statement was made in the House of 'Representatives : by the Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley): "The honorable member for Rob ertson (Mr. -Williams) has asked whethelr I would consider diverting some portion of the "surcharge on petrol" amounting to approximately £2.000,000, to shire' councils so that country roads could be repaired and maintained. "The amount of approximately £2,000,000 mentioned by the honor able member refers presumably to funds held in the Liquid Fuel Equal ization Fund, which was created for the purposes of' the price stabiliza tion plan in relation to kerosene and petrol.and related products. Credits to this fund terminated in Septem ber, 1945. The purposes of the fund do not permit of the moneys being diverted to shire councils for road construction and maintenance pur Doses. Scheme-The Premier's Department forwarded a copy of the report on the Scheme and advised that a Special Committee had been appointed to investigate the proposals for a Water Supply and Hydro Electric Scheme. RATIONING COMMISSION The Director of Rationing (Mr. J. B. Cummings) announced sub stantial reductions in coupon ratings last week on woollen overcoats to operate on and from last Saturday, 7th June. Men, women and children will benefit from . the reductions. The new ratings are Unlined: Man 6, Woman 6, Child 4, Lined: Man 11, Woman 10, Child 7 Old ratings were: Unlined: Man 11, Woman 9, Child 6 Lined: 'Man 17, Woman 14,1 Child 10 Mr. Cummings • emphasised that the reductions in coupon ratings ap plied only to overcoats made from' woollen material.
