The Pioneer. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1895, CO-OPERATION WITH MILDURA. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 30 November 1895

f jje pioneer. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1895, CO-OPERATION WITH MILDUBA. Ren mark fruitgrow ers might very well take into serious con sideration the ques tion of the ad vis ability of making overtures to their fellow producers in the sister irriga tion settlement of Mild urn with a view to co-operation in testing, creating and fostering foreign markets for dried fruit. Almost exactly similar conditions obtain at both places, as to climate, soil, variety of produce, irrigation and methods of cultivation. The modes of preparing the fruit for market are also practically the same. The only differences are in the longer distance it is from Mildura to a port of shipment, its more frequent isola tion from steamboat traffic in the low river season, and the differences between the tariff of Victoria and that of South Australia. These items however would hardly enter into any consideration in sending goods to foreign markets. The freights on Mildura produce will be a little higher than that on ...

GRADING AND PACKING DRIED FRUITS. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 7 December 1895

GRADING AND PACKING DRIED FRUITS. By R. F. Walton, in the llural Californian. There is 110 subject of greater im portance to fruitgrowers at this time than the problem connected with the grading and packing of our dried fruits. Many abuses have grown up under the present system of puiting our goods upon the. murker, which will require time, persistence, and hard work on our part to correct: and the sooner we comprehend the situa tion, and set ourselves about correct ing them, the better for the fruit in dustry. . Sufficient success in grading all kinds of dried fruit has been at tained to warrant the conclusion that any kind of fruit can be properly graded dry at a nominal cost on the same plan that prunes are no\y graded, and with the same degree of regularity. The improvement recently made in the Hamilton grader, suggested by a series of experiments conducted by the manager of the West Side Drying Association of Santa Clara county, have furnished the fruitgrowers of the State with...

"THE RELIEF OF MILDURA." [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 7 December 1895

•THE RELIEF OF MILDURA." In the Melbourne "Argus,' of Saturday Nov. 23rd, ''Oriel," in his "Passing Show," commented as follows on the recent arrival at Mildura of a heavy con signment of liquor for the local clubs :— The dootors had run out the whisky, and our stock of liquor was spent, Save one poor half dozen of lager that belonged to the liechabite tent ; And the sky was as brass above us. and the land was fevered wilh'drouglit, And we wandered with blistered gullets, and tongues that were hanging out. And ever the Murray to tempt us, at the edge of the sun cracked iiat; But no, we were men of Mildura—we had'nt come down 10 that. But daily the torture lasted, and daily the horror grew Of the thought we dare not utter—the thin* that all of us knew. Someone must try the water, must yield to the fatal law. So we shared in that devil's gamble—and mine was the shortest straw. One moment of limuan weakness—then I stepped to the river's blink ; It was flowing before me—water—and I was ...
