A Pastoral Letter. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 6 December 1905

A Pastoral Letter. The following is an extract from the ' Pastoral Letter, recently is sued to the Church by tho Arch bishops and Bishops of the Com monwealth on matters affecting the well-being of the people :— THE DECLINING BIRTH ; RATE. AVc have left until the last a subject which we are unanimous in believing to be of critical impor tance to 'the* national life. We recognise with great thank fulness the clear utterance, founded upon weighty evidence, of the Royal Commission on this subject in New South Wales. We urge all who are concerned to give the Com mission's report their most serious attention, aut lor the many wh...

POLITICAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 6 December 1905

POLITICAL. ? Jlr. Gardiner, M.Ij.A., objects to gaol chaplains being paid, and says that clergymen should do the work without fee or reward. Now, Mr. Gardiner 'represents a ''lass (Unionists) which don't believe in doing- 'nothing for nothing,' but always exacts the 'maximum of nay 'for the minimum of work. i'/irsons Imvo to Jive ami pay their way and very often on a very slender salary. ' If Mr. Seddon be cor rect, then lie should know who arc the delinquents, and lie should lo.se no lime in .making them pay up. It would be interesting to know liow much revenue N.S.YV. loses every year through leakages in tin1 land and income taxes. AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE EARLY DAYS. Chapter IV.-Continued. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 6 December 1905

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE lE-A-IR/LY ZD-A-TTS. By CHARLES WHITE. Chapter IV. — Continued. ' Mr. Harris, -author of that re markable book (now very' difficult to obtain) 'Settlers and Convicts,' narrates some of the troubles through which he and other free immigrants had to pass in those un settled times. He says: — 'About three miles beyond Wind sor, towards Sydney, we came to a group of constables, all armed and gathered round a young man, who evidently, by his English dress, had not been long in the colony. This of course they could see as well as I could, and as there was not the slightest indication in any other point of his being a bush ranger, there was in fairness and common sense no ground for sup posing him anything else but a free emigrant. They, however, insisted that, as he hatl 'no protection,' they would take him into custody to be sent to Hyde Park Barracks, Sydney, the head office, 'for iden tification.' It was in vain that he remonstrated; their resolution re main...

Telephone Exchange. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 6 December 1905

Telephone Exchange. Tim important matter of telephone communication lias always engaged the earnest attention of Mr. Austin Chapman, M.H.K., Postmaster ticneral, and although his con tinuous? efforts have met with sub stantial success, still there are scores of places in New South which should be taking advantage of the progressive and up-to-date telephone system but are not doing so. Cooma has established an exchange and has now a day and night service. And so pleased are the subscribers and the general public with the time-saving and expeditious telephone that they would never think of reverting to the old, cumbrous and time-wasting methods of communication. . ? . * * « And when the Budget read the list of places in this State which have adopted the system, it seems really surprising that Bega has not long ago made a move to have a telephone exchange established in the town. Under the old regula tions fifteen subscribers at least were required to establish an ex change in any cent...
