TO THE EDITOR OF THE NORTH-EASTERN ENSIGN. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 23 August 1872

TQ M11E EDITOR OF THLE NOR17?i EASTERN ENSIGhV. Sir,-As the Permissive Bill is now under notice, let me state my belief that tectotalism is a moderate view of the case " temperance versus alcohol." And this leads me to inquire of our vigr.erons, how can wine be called the pure juice of the grape when, by formenta tion, it decays and changes its nature, thereby. importing into it that objectionable principle, alcohol? Milk is tlhe pure juice of the cow, but what will that sweet drink become if allowed to fe' ment for some years ? Will it lthentbo called milk, or become a fashiopable beverage? ''This wine subject reminds me of having read that the ancients prevented the grape juice fermenting by keeping it under uround and Ioem the air. This process cx cludes alcohol, and the beverage was not intoxicating. This, no doubt, was scriptural wine, but even in those good old times many people preferred ano'her kind of wine madle with a little alcohol (or devil) in it, and were enabled to to...

THE North-eastern Ensign Published on Tuesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 1872. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 23 August 1872

THE Publishda on 7ueodaUs and Fridays. FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 1872. TuE interest taken in elections for the Council is not equal to that shown in contests for the Assembly, the ieason being obvious, the im 'portanco of the one is not commensurate with that of the other. evoertheless, a certain amount of attention is devoted to Upper House elections, and the seat now vacant for the Eastern Province will be shortly fought for by MJr. Toanen.LL, the member who retires by effluxion of time, and Mr. P.Tur?x O'lhIE.e, of Hawthorn, who is desirous of obtaining the position. Mr. TunnsuiL has represented the Province for a considerable time. It would be difficult to ctiticiso any of hlis acts because lie has taken very little part in the delibera tions of the Lody to which lie has belonged, and certainly has inot done anything in the past that gives him very great claims for re election, although possibly beyond the fact of not peshaps laving given as much attention to the duties as he might hav...

TO Inc EDITOR 0o1 2:11 E iwj. EABST1ERfN ! SIoN. Sir,-It is not the least gratifying sign of the times that the ratep yers in the South. west Riding of the Shire of Bonalla have awakened from their slumbers, and, li~e giant refreshed with wine, put forth their energies in the fond, but perhaps dolusedl hope of counteraoting the contralis ing fluence of Benalla. The example we have set may be productive of good by showing our sapient councillore that we will no longer be trilled with. It was not that we knew much of Mr Ryan, but he promises wcli. and we are in hopes ho'will exert himself ia our behalf and enable us to go out and come in without being drowned. Indeedi Sir, I was an cteor in a scone a few days ago that might take some little effect on even a councillor. GENERAL SUMMARY. LONDON, July 12. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 27 August 1872

GEINOERAL SUMMAILy. LoNDO, July 12' The Australian mail was delayed two days later. The Spectator treats the colonial tarif question as subordilato to that of federation. It sees in the resut of the Noe South Wales elcctioni an opportunity for Mr Duffy and Mr Parkes to initiate a federation scheme with every prospect of success. All attempts to establish a Customs Union must fail till a customs Parliament. exists armed - with legislative powers. Federation is the condition precedent of any effective Zollverein. The Spectator regards Mr Daify as the statesman likply to achcivo this great policy. The debate on the Polynesian kidnapping has been initiated by Lord Kimberley, who has declared the deoeormination of the Government to 'repress all illegal practise.: He expressed his confidence in the Queens. land authorities to do everything possible to destroy the abominablol traffic ;c; - Six war sriaps had been appointed to the A?utralian station, besides vessels for the New Zealand cast...
