Monday's Dinner. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 20 December 1878

Monday's Dinner. To say that the complimentary dinner of Monday evening was not a success would be the reverse of the fact for a more earnest display of good-will to the guest could hardly have been given, but yet it was not what a com plimentary dinner io an ex-Mayor ought to be. It was unmistakeably a party gathering expressing not the feelings of the whole Town but only of one side of it and instead ot being marked by a kindly feeling and freedom from strife all being lost in congratula tion or sympathy, it,was deeply scarred with virulent and excessive personal references of a character calculated to degrade the status of the persons taking part in them. If any bitter thingsremaiiied to be said the*- ought to have been got over at tbe declaration of the poll or in an address to the electors immediately following that event so that in deed anh not merely in word the past strife might have been put aside and not kept up for so long a period after the election. Attacks upon absent ...

Water Supply. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 20 December 1878

Water Supply. Summer is now here in hot earnest, and we are therefore again obliged to draw attention to the need that exists for some scheme of water supply being at once brought into use. We 'wrote about this subject at considerable length some time since, advocating a system of it and pipes where required, with permission to those who might live in the lines of pipes to have house supplies laid on, all using water to pay for it, and our proposals were so highly ap proved by tiie Corporation that they forwarded it to the Government as their choice amid the various plans sug gested. The Government have inti mated their adoption, (subject to our consent) of a slightly modified plan by which the cost was met by a general rate. However this may be the fact remains that some system is immediately required in some parts of the town where we hear complaints that the water carts cannot nearly maintain the needed supply and hard ship results. As we state elsewhere the well irom which it wa...
