Plain and Fancy Dress Ball at Upper Thornton. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 30 October 1908

Plain and Fancy Dress Ball at Upper Thornton. Undoubtedly the greatest success held in the Upper Thornton Hall for many years was the pilain and fancy dress ball of the 14th inst. So great was the interest taken in the event that during the previous fortnight many of the sterner sex declared that their diet consisted largely of spangles, sequins and similar articles. .The hall was crowded to the fullest *extent and the large number of fancy costumes worn lent variety to the scene and called forth praise from all. Dancing interspersed with songs was kept up with animation until far into the night, An excellent supper was provided by the ladies to whom the sueeial thanks of the committee are due, it being fully recognised that they have the welfare of the hall at Thert, for not only did they sacrifice time in preparitg dresses but they also provided all refreshments for the occasion. The result was that a very substantial amount was credited to the funds of the hall. The following wer...

Marriage Licenses. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 30 October 1908

Marriage Licenses. We have been requested to reprint the following sub-leader, which appeared in. the " Argus " recently:-, Mr George Gladstone and Mir E. I. Scott, clergymen of th, Church of England, were dismissed from the diocese of Wangaratta; nevertheless Sir Alqx ander Peacock, as Chief Secretary, has appointed each of them Ia registrar for the celebration of marriages. In this he has contradicted his previous action. At some time in last July, Mr Gladstone asked that "the Nathalia Reformed Church of England " should be claimed as a new denomination; and peotitioned that he, as. its manager and director, should be empowered to solomnisoemarriages. Sir Alexanoder Peacock (with little hesitation, we should think) refused his r,'quest. " We don't want any more ruliious de nominations," was his comment. Well, one of the chief advantages to a pastor in a recognised new denominationl is that its proclamation enables him to set up in " the marrying business." This privilege, though n...

Alexandra & Yea Standard NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1908. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 30 October 1908

I lIqadnra & J Je' dtandanid NEC TEIMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1908. ONCE every year man's poor drudge is put on a pedestal and wortdsipped from afar. ' The horse may be said to have truly conme into his own, for he is the centre round which all other topics of interest revolve, and Australians, whether it be the ultra.smnart and dallper city clerk, or the worker in the back-bilocks, or the judge and legislators of thue county are all engaged in speculating is to who the winner will be. Of " dead certs "and "dead hirds" there are any amount, some of the "dead birds "are so dead that they never give the speculator a run for his money. The whole Common wealth'is, so to sneak,. indulging in one great enormous racing carnival, which, to many of the people, serve to mark the end of a year. The only regrettable factor in the matter is that, in a few instances, it leads the way to a vicious sort of gambling. We may illustrate what we mean. When a man puts a shilling or tw...

Original Poetry. "WATTLE BLOSSOMS." [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 30 October 1908

Original Poetry. "WATTLE BLOSSOMS." [By C.G.L.] Two little folk—like the babes in the wood, Are wandering hand in hand ; Music of Spring makes the deep forests ring, So all things may understand That there's a "Something now seeming to say "Let everything sing that may, Out of the depths of a winter's gloom Has Spring not arisen to-day ?"   Myrtle is thoughtful, her eyes fill with tears, A look that is " far away." Though the surroundings are lovely, indeed, Our eyes to the child must stray. Lending wee Sonny, a cherub of four, Who listens with keen delight, " Mummy," she tells of, in accents of love, While striving with tears to fight. Rounding a bend in the fern-bowered creek They pause 'neath a wattle-tree ; Gold-tinted blossoms are blazing with light, An elysium for bird and for bee. Ah ! tearful eyes, little quivering lips ; The lassie is trying to tell Messages tender, their dear "mummy" left The babe that she loved so well. " Sonny," the little child slowly remar...

Rice Dramatic Company. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 6 November 1908

Rice Dramatic Company. A bumper house greeted this favorite company on their re-appearance here after an absence of five years. The company with one or two exceptions is the same talented combination which toured this district some years ago. As usual with all plays submitted by this popular company, the piece. My Partner, was excellently mounted, full attention being paid to every detail. Miss Rachel Rice gave a very pleasing interpretation of Mary Brandon, the wayward daughter of Mr Brandon, keeper of the Golden Gate Inn. Miss Rice acted a trying part with great skill and from start to finish received the plaudits of the audience. Mr Thos. A. Holdworth, a young American actor, who is a new addition to the company, undertook the part of Joe Saunders, the hero, and played with an eveness, and versatility which re downs to his credit. Miss Ray Nelson, an old favorite, was greeted with great applause for her singing of Daughters, Home Sweet Home and Killarney, and in her interpretatio...
