A Trip Up the Fitzroy. A Vista of Beauty Spots. Continued from Last Week. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 1 April 1922

t A Trip Up the Fitzroy. I • A Vista of Beauty Spots. Continued from Last Week. There are some magnificent reacaes up the river, some* extending far miles. In fact the stream right through is very wide indeed, an® picturesQue spotB abound. It is, how ever, somewhat sad to note Quite a number of abandoned dwellings which are going to rack and ruin- Quite a number of fishermen live in the up ' per reaches and their nets were to be seen hanging in the trees on the » bank. There is one spot, known as the rapids, in which there is quite a strong current, so strong that it was actually too strong tor the tide. At some time or other an obstruction lodged in the river at this place and it has gradually silted up until it is only a few yards wide for a fair dis tance. Then it openB out into a beau tiful reach, nearly aA wide as what the Hamilton use^ to be. Right up to where we went—Alligator Creek— the Fltiroy is a good deal wider than the Brisbane above the Victoria Bridge. Our American fr...

NOTES & COMMENTS [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 1 April 1922

fcD jir futa-j ancic Queensland's very popular Go vernor is rather a humorist, and al lows his talent lull play when the occasion warrants it. He also seems to he well-informed on every sub ject under the sun, and it would be ^interesting to learn what he doesn't know. While in Redciiife the other day in connection with the opening : mt a new jetty, and referring to the difficulties which lay iin the path of {those engaged in fighting the "inani mate forces of Nature," Sir Matthew Nathan said marine engineers and wharf builders had to contend against a sort of elongated oyster called the teredo—one of the most mischievous things in creation: Why it should be so mischievous he dig not know; the only clue he had was the zoological fact that "there were 600 females to every male No heart, not even toe of, wood, , could resist snch an onslaught. In regard to the Redciiife jetty the en gineer had wisely decided to turn the flank of the foe instead of mak ing a frontal attack, and had uti...
