Pruning. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 25 June 1898

Pruning. BY CLARET. jRUNING, like all else connected with viticulture, cannot be guided by any par,.cular rules or practice, the many and diverse conditions of soil, climate and variety, rendering it a process in which much observation, skill and common sense are necessary. In many countries large two handed sheats are used for cutting large and small woods alike, but these are very slow in the former, and detrimental to the vine, by crnshing the fibres instead of making a clear cut, in the latter case, A preferable instrument, and one becoming universally adopted in Victoria, is the sec" cateur. which cuts fast, easily and clean if kept well sharpened ; any dead stubs or large branches being removed by a saw, which is very easily carried, and does not injure the woody fibres. The proper time for pruning varies, of course, with the district, variety and season, but it is, as a rule inadvisable to start earlier, than the middle of May. or finish later than August. Those varieties whi...

OUR SERIAL STORY. OUR HARRY: A TALE OF THE DIGGINGS. [ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] CHAPTER I. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 25 June 1898

OUR SERIAL STORY. OUR HARRY: A TALE OF THE --~c- DIGGINGS. - By J. M. BARR, [ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] CHAPTER I. The father of " Our Harry" was a hardy, bearded ;ix footer, loose-jointed and large-boned, with a voice gruff as the north winds which he had to battle with, and a face as brown as the cordage of the nets he used, for he was a fisherman on the rude coast of Cornwell, and earned a precarious, yet sufficient, living by that dangerous occu pation. His mother was a little bit of a woman, with a sweet face and tender mouth, that quivered with suppressed pain each time her husband left on his fishing voyages. There never was such a noble, fearless, gentle, and kind man formed in nature's manufactory, and she waited with "Our Harry " in her arms or at her side on the rough jetty till the little boat became smaller and smaller in the distance, and the wave of the hand could no more be seen. Then she would return to her cottage with her gentle eyes swim ming, and leaving Harry at the...
