The Lost Chiid. HIS EXPERIENCES IN THE BUSH. From the Barrier Miner of Wednesday. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 20 August 1898

Th§ Lest Gfaiift. HIS EXPERIENCES IN THE BUSH. From {\\&Barrier Miner of Wednesday. The little son of Mr. S- C. Day, who was lost on Sundays was btoagnt home to Broken Hill to-day by the wood carter who discovered him yester day afternoon in the Apollyon Yalley. The boy, who is a stordy little chap, seems none the worse for. his experience, which he looks back upon with the utmost coolness.. He does not - appear, either, to have much respect for the qualifications of his father or brothers as bashmen. " They were all lost," he says, and he seems to have an idea that they were responsible for mnch of the tronble by getting lost. He explained that he stopped behind the rest of the party to pick up some start, peas, which he hid dropped, and when he was ready to go on: again his father was not in sight. " What did yon %lo on Sunday night?" he was asked this afternoon. 4' "Walk," he: replied laconically. " And were you not 'frightened in the dark :v " Nuh !' granted the youngste...

An Ingenious Irishman. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 20 August 1898

&& I&gg&ious SHs&maa. " Tom Magoire is a genius," says the St. Louis Post Despatch. *® He is a yard foreman at the Laclide Gas Co's plant.* A sewer pipe leading from one ofthe buildings to the river! !, bank, 160 feat away, became clogged. i The pipe^was 16 feet below the - sur face. M&gaire had been thinking about a plan for several days. One night he caught two big, grey rats, and these he determined to put into the sewer. -They were taken to,-the mouth at the river bank and released. The opening " was then securely closed behind them,- leaving the aniT raals with only one chance of life. .That was to go straight ahead. And they did. Several more rats'were caught and turned into the sewer, until a dozen were gnawing away in : the pipe. The morning after the last detachment joined the main army water began to t-ickle from the pipe. Iron rods, and steam were then ap-: plied. In ten. minutes the sewer was clear."

Chamberlain and His Wife. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 20 August 1898

Cham"bs?laia aad His Wife. The speech of Joseph Chamberlain, advocating an allianre between Great Britian and the United States, has (says an'American paper,) attracted so much attention that many persons, in discussing the subject, recall the visit which Mr.Chatnberlain made to Washington in 1887, as chairman of the Fisheries Commission. Ho was the sociai lion of the hour. A Balti more lady who met him tells the following story to the Sun :— " He war? a big, burly man, caring so little for his appearance thatat one of the most fashionable dinners of the; season his cravat got turned to almost under his car, and his shirt stud came unfastened, and he sat calmly oblivi ons to either accident. His brains and charm in conversation won him friends^wherever he went. - " One day he called on a lady who happened to be giving a girls' lunch eon. She went out at once to see him, and laughingly said that if lie did not mind being the only man present she would be delighted if lie would come i...
